Hi guys, I have a 1995 Mercury 9.9 4 Stroke motor that will start but dies out quickly after starting. Where should I start? Fuel Lines, New carb, tune the carb? I have always had 2 strokes, not sure if troubleshooting on these is any different. Any help would be great. I also need to get a manual for this motor.

Hi Jt,
The idle circuit on that motor is very small and it plugs up easily, The motor will run if it is partially choked! You may even be able to clear it up with a strong dose of sea foam in a small amount of gas. I recommend total disassembly of the carb and a good soak in strong carb cleaning liquid. The fact that you got this far with a 1999 without problems is good. The passage you have to clean runs out of the carb bowl up over the top of the venturie to the back side of the throttle plate. After the soak use air pressure to blow out all passages. A manual would help you with the location of all the passages. It is a pretty simple carb and is not hard to take apart. There is also a cover over the idle adjustment screw made out of brass that has to be removed if it hasn't been removed already. All plastic, rubber parts must be removed before the soak!!!! Good Luck ! A repair shop will get $70 for the carb kit and $100 for labor at least so you really should learn to do this.

~~Hello Stutter, I have a 2006 9.9 Big Foot, worked well for two years. Have what sounds like what is going on with yours.
I picked up a special spark tester light just for high volt spark. To old for a shock LOL. Replaced the CD unit, replaced the carb.
Not sure which fixed the problem. The Merc Service folks were scratching their head over it but I works now an that is just fine.
Try putting a little gas in the cylinders and crank. If it works is the carb or primer to the carb.
Good Luck

Hi, I have been unable to locate a choke on this motor. Am I missing something?

Its electric and it covers a small hole in the side of the carb and that pulls in more fuel. Its called a en richer. More that likely its a plugged up carb.
