G'day ev1
i bought a mercury 3.3 at a yard sale it spent 3 days on the bottom of a bay
model number 0984277
i striped the motor replaced the bearings cleanded the cooling system when i reassembled it i used gasket goo on the head ( i know now silly me ) i started the motor started fairly easiley ran it in a bucket i left it for 15 min i came back to find that it was not pumping water not sure how long it was like that mabe 10 min i stoped motor striped it again piston rings were gooed to the pistion.
i replaced the rings and bought a gasket kit ( no goo used this time )
after putting the motor back togeather it wont start
i have spark - i removed the plug and held it to the case and it sparks
with the choke on the motor turns over very easily and no sign of start or smoke (see pic this is how the carbie was set)
with the choke off the motor sounds like it wants to start after a few pulls of the cord it sort of locks up cord wont come out any further ( mabe compression lock im not sure ) and a little bit of smoke comes from exaust (see pic this is how the carbie was set)
silly me adjusted the carb needle that sets the idle gap
float in carb works ok
i have tryed using ether spraying in to carbie small puffs of smoke and coard locks up any ideas ?
i have a few questions mabe someone could answer for me
1, when starting motor where should the throttle be ?
2, when looking in to carbie at throttle full open there is a clear view through carbie what should gap be when throttle on lowest ( so i can reset carbie)?
3, should i put a little goo on head gasket to form a seal ?
4, what should compression be i have a compression tester but cause its only 1 cyclinder i have nothing to compare it to i hooked it up pulled it a few times it went to about 90psi i let it sit for 30 min and compression did not drop at all do i have enough compression?
5, in the strip down i removed the coil that makes the spark dose it have to be orentated a sirten way or will anyway do?
6, fuel oil mixture what should it be im using 50:1 ?
7, when trying to start should i have motor in a bucket to give back pressure i have been trying to start with out a bucket?
sorry if i draged on a bit i am trying to give you all the info you will need to help me thanks in advance
