Thank you all for the great information on this forum. I have a Mariner 30HP manual start, no battery, which I purchase new in 1995. Other than a failed CDM assembly (I replaced both) never had a single problem. A few days ago, I noticed some problems in starting up and two days after, running the home stretch at high speed, the engine died bust before I could tie to the dock; right place to die if I may say so.
Changed spark plugs, cleaned carburetor, fuel pump assembly, fuel filter and fuel water separator, tried to start it up and exactly same problem. I have spark on both spark plugs. Decided to check the trigger and stator. The measurement in the trigger is right where it should be, but the reading on the green/white white/green wires of the stator is way off: 153 Ohms when it should be be around 500 (don't have the exact number because I left the service manual in the boat). One thing that I noticed recently was that when I removed the top cowl and placed my hand on top of the flywheel it was hot; it struck me as odd.
So I've decided to replace the stator. The original stator 832074A5 is no longer available and the replacement 832074A11 refers to something called "Red Stator". I have a few questions and appreciate your time in addressing them.
1. Do you agree with my diagnostic that I have a stator problem?
2. Do you know the meaning of the designation "Red Sator". I read somewhere (here I believe) that the failure rate is high on these red stators.
3. Is CDI a good option or should I go with an original 832074A11 Red Stator from Mercury.
4. How can I identify the root cause of the problem? Otherwise the same thing could, unless it's normal wear and tear.
Thanks very much.
