I am new to boating and purchased a used Pontoon (20 foot) boat about a year and a half ago. I had a "knocking" sound in the engine and had someone look at it. He said when he broke the motor down that all these metal shavings came falling out . He told me the gears went out and the gear case is locking up down where the prop is and it would cost about $2100 to repair (not including the labor, which he says would not be alot). Is this a fair price for this kind of work? Also, does anybody have an expert opinion about Johnson motors? I know they have been sold, but I was just wondering if they are reputable. And how can I find out the real age of the motor if all I have is the serial number? Thanks for the advice! :) jyevans61@hotmail.com

Jackrabbit
Welcome to Iboats and to the wonderful world of boating.
On your transom bracket there should be a plate riveted to it with a number "J50****". This is the model number. Post it back and someone will get you the proper year.
As far as your lower unit costs, I lost one on my previous boat. Repair tag $2G's. Look at the top of the iboats in the boat motors tab Click Me . They have some lower units listed there.

Good Luck

jackrabbit,
You should be able to find a good used lower unit online for about $900. $2100 is screwing you totally!!! I'll keep my eyes open, and may be able to get you one even cheaper.

And the knocking sound you heard was most likely the clutch dog. About a $250 fix.
