Help Last night the motor acted like it had a fuel pump problem but the alarm went off. When we squeezed the bulb it would rev even with the key off. The only way to shut off the engine was to unhook the fuel line. Any ideas????

Howdy, SB.

What you got was thermal runaway. It is why you should NEVER rev a 2 stroke engine to high rpm with no load on it.

What behavior causes you to say it acted like it had a fuel pump problem?

What alarm did you get?

Let us know. :)

If we squeezed the bulb it would run to get us to the dock. Once there when we tried to start it we would squeeze the bulb a couple times and it would start and run to high revs immediately and even shuting the key off it would still rev until we unhooked the fuel line and all the fuel was used up Thank you

Howdy, SB.
Hmmm. I think your problem is more than just a fuel starvation problem.

Something may have come loose or broken in your pump or one of your carburetors or carb linkage.

Time for a manual. Inspect everything mechanical associated with the carbs and their linkage.

If everything is where it should be, check out the fuel supply for restrictions or air leaks.

Which alarm did you get? That may tell you a lot. If the engine is VRO inspect the mechanism that meters the oil into the gas at the fuel pump.

If your alarm was related to the VRO, disconnect the oil input to the pump, plug it and give the engine 50:1 premix until you have wrung it out.

If it were mine I would replace the VRO pump with a premix pump and always use premix.

Let us know what you find. :)

Just guessing but it could be a stuck linkage on your carb or your float sticking (that is why you may have to keep pumping your primer bulb).

Your post said it doesn't run right. Does that mean it only runs left? Don't get sore I'm just kidding.

Re: 1995 Johnson 40

Just to let everyone know I replaced the VRO Pump but found the problem to be a brass valve broken at the block which works in conjunction with the VRO Pump right below the starter. Also a quick tip for those that replace this pump, squirt some 50-1 in the carbs to fire up the motor. This pump needs a little assistance in the beginning. And yes fireman757 it does run left now HAHA
