I see that this is a fairly common problem for these 3.0 volvos. I have a 3.0 in a 95 glastron. It will not prime when first started in the water. I have replaced the impeller for the pump twice so far and both times the fins get ripped right off in the first ride. The only way i can get the pump to prime is to take the top hose off the pump until the water starts coming and then plug the hose back on. Is there a check valve anywhere in the system that could be gone or something else.

Is your thermostat ok?? If it's stuck closed then you won't get any waterflow. What about the water pump?? I'd get a service manual and use it to help diagnose the problem.

Not any more common than any other marine engine.

You are not getting water to the pump, and running dry is what destroys the impeller.
Obviously you have an air leak between the pump and the pickup.
This file should help you find that leak.

Thanks guys, i will check it out tomorrow. Does anyone know if there is a check valve anywhere? I can get the pump to prime as long as i take the discharge hose off the pump. Once i remove the hose water starts pumping and i can put the hose on and go. For some reason it will not prime while everything is hooked up. When i take the discharge hose from pump to engine off exhaust comes out of the hose from the engine. Is this normal?
