Misalignment can easily cause belts to wear quickly. Particularly because the belt will tend to squeal which will inturn cause you to tighten it more. The belt is then misaligned and too tight.
If the alternator or if it runs around an idler or tension pulley is dragging it can cause the belt to slip and wear fast. All of these issues should produce a burnt belt smell. If you don't have that then I would look for something rubbing on the belt.
