My motor cranks and runs but only with the key in the crank position. I put a volt meter to the kill switch and got the following. Lanyard connected: (B/Y to Red wire) Key in off position - 12 volts, with key in run position 0 Volts. With Lanyard disconnect: Key in Off position 12 Volts, Key in run position 12 volts.

Is this correct for the Kill Switch? If so where should I check next?

Sometimes the boat cranks and runs for a few minutes then shuts off and wont run unless the key is in the crank position.

There are two "M" (magneto) terminals on the gnition switch.... a black/yellow wire attached to (usually) a raised "M" terminal, a plain black wire attached to the other "M" terminal with the black wire leading to a ground. This make or break connection between the two "M" terminals of the ignition switch is the ignition kill circuit.

In the RUN or START position of the ignition switch... the two "M" terminals are NOT connected which enables the ignition (spark).

In the OFF position of the ignition switch... the two "M" terminals of the ignition ARE connected which shorts out and kills the ignition (spark).

Assuming that someone hasn't wired something inappropriately...............................

Apparently on your ignition switch, the two "M" terminals are connected (shorted out) when the key is in the RUN position, effectively killing the ignition. This being the case, replace the ignition switch.

I was thinking it was a problem with the stator. Most of the time it fires up and runs for about two minutes then shuts off without a sputter. I have the testing process from CDI for this boat. Should I bother checking for 11 to 22 volts on the orange to orange black wire or just get another stator. I cant really test running voltage when its not running. This motor already has a CDI powerpak but I dont know how new.

Disconnect the Black/Yellow wire from the ignition switch (kill circuit). If that cures the problem, replace the ignition switch.
