Hi anyone.:D

This motor hasn`t apparently run in about 4 years.

I am asking this as I haven`t worked with one yet.My brother in-law just bought a peterborough boat which came with a 70 hp evinrude. I did a model search, and came up with 1995 as year of manufacture(70tleor).Yesterday, we hooked a new battery to the wires, brand new fuel in tank, and new plugs. There was about 2/3 oil mix in resevoir, pumped primer no problem -both fuel as well as oil.Started engine after only bout 15 seconds of turnover. Some blue smoke-as expected, but cleared and was running well(water muffs on), saw no water from pee hole though. Then we noticed a massive fuel "leak", coming from what appears as an air filter. we shut motor off,and fuel stops "leaking", start it and it begins again. I thought if we could lower the trim; as we did all this as motor was at transport angle.
As stated earlier,I am not too familiar with these, but i pressed on the down button on the throttle, and we could hear a whirr, but did not move.

Question- is there a transport lock on these ,such as my old 40(1974)?

Question why did the tilt/trim not work?

question -why could we not turn steering?

quesation - why fuel leaking?

We want to fix this ourselves, as boat/motor and trailer are at lake,; about 20 ft from shore, but trailer needs new tires if we have to take and get fixed;and we would love to avoid this! thanx for any help in advance-Reid.;)

I'd fix the trailer first and get the boat on dry land. Easier to work on it that way and if you drop anything(which I'm prone to) you don't have to dive for it.

Thanks Wingedwheel. Fortunately it is on dry land, and on the trailer, but with only 20 ft to shore it beats 30 km(20miles-),to mechanic.Where would I find out about the owners manual?I`m sure it would answer some of questions.

You can get a Seloc or Clymer just about anywhere. If you want a decent deal on a factory manual, check E-bay

Re: 1995 evinrude 70hp-issues

Hi, I have a 1994 70hp (it has been an extremely reliable motor over the years), and recently revived a 69 55 hp (same 3 cyl config) after 10+ yrs of sitting.

- My 94 does smoke a lot on startup - cpu fast idle setting does that...
- the water should come out the pee-hole. You'll find lots of reasons here as to why not. I did have this problem once though because the hole was plugged with insects. Also, on my 94 I get a weak stream from the hole unless I put a clamp on my muffs (they're kind of loose). BUT.. bottom line is that if the block is getting too hot to touch after a minute or two your impeller is not pumping water. If the motor has been cranked ever without muffs then the impeller is likely shot - but relatively easy and inexpensive to change.
- The fuel leak is concerning, the "air filter" is just an air box, if you remove the front cover you'll see right into the carbs. I'd think that one of the float needles is stuck and causing the fuel pump to dump fuel into the carb throat (but read around about that). This would be solved with a carb re-build and cleaning (also read about re-synching the 3 carbs). Angle of the motor should not cause "massive" leak.
- On my 94 there are two transport locks. One on the side of the mount (small cam on one side) and one set of arms that fold down in the centre of the trim assembly (hard to describe). Both locks should not prevent the motor from being trimmed up though. On mine if it sits too long (over the winter) the trim gets sticky (only quiet wirrrr) and eventually will go. If you have clicking that is good, power to solenoids, if wirring then motor works, also check the hydraulic level and to see if anything looks seized. There is a manual release knob on the pump as well... Hard to recall what it looks like but should be self evident. Try that.
- If you can't turn the steering or it is stiff then the teleflex steering line is seized. Could be where it goes through the motor mount. You can re-grease that part but I've had a few boats with lines that were really stiff due to internal corrosion. Remove the rod that connects the steering line to the motor and see if it is the line or the motor which is seized. New teleflex lines are not crazy expensive and I hated driving boats with stiff ones...

Good luck, in the end you'll have a motor which should give you many years of good service..
