I'm still struggling with my Evinrude 50 from a while back. Got the New CDI and the weather is good so I put it in today. Have looked for a electric schematic but found many it seems except one for this engine. I want to make sure I don't reverse polarity or anything else as the CDI and coil add up in $. Is this possible? My question is does the long ground wire from the CDI ground to the dual coil pack?

Just place the ring terminal against the clean block under the power pack and secure with mounting bolt. A star washer is your friend.

What do you mean by " reverse polarity" here ?----12 volts from the battery does not go to the powerpack !!

Don't know much about reverse polarity, that is why I said is this possible. I was just asking if the black wire that comes out of the CDI, (not the one on the motor black and is grounded on the engine) is to be grounded on the coil pack as I think that is where the wire was before but now can't remember. I don't want to take a chance of ruining the CDI or coils if the black wire from the CDI does not ground on the coils.

It can be grounded anywhere on the block.

Most times the black wire from the powerpack (your "CDI") is mounted directly on the block (and against the block) by one of the powerpack mounting bolts...do not place a fiberous washer (if applicable) against the block first.

As jackdaawg says, there should also be a star washer there as well.

The trouble with this is the coil pack, power pack and rectifier all mount on a bracket (see photo) and they seem to have an insulated washer on all three bolts that attach the bracket to the motor. I don't know if I have the black ground wires going to the right places as someone else disassemble all of this. A black wire comes out of the rectifier and I mounted it the left side of the power pack on the top. (this does not seem it goes to ground) The main long black wire out of the new power pack I mounted the metal attachment at the bottom end of the coil pack. (this seems like it does not go to ground either) Don't know and can't tell if this is right and don't want to start it or test for spark until I am sure the bracket and/or the electronic components are connected right. You can see in the photo on the left side, the coil pack and the metal attachment on the bottom I am talking about with the loose screw. This is where I have the power pack black wire connected. This photo was before I had it all connected back together.

You're fine...that bracket is mounted on the block so it's grounded.

You can see another ground wire on the bottom mounting bolt of the rectifier/regulator.

Thanks for the great reply Mo....There is a black wire coming off the rectifier that I bolted to the power pack top...then I bolted the black ground wire form the power pack to the coil pack...I will post a photo. See the black wire that comes from the PP and is bolted to the bottom of the coil pack and in the other photo you can see the rectifier wire bolted to the top of the PP. Are these connections OK...I know I'm getting a little paranoid here.

I broke down and ordered an old repair manual. Hopefully it will be in-depth enough to show these grounds especially if the power pack ground wire goes to the coil pack or not.

The ground wires from all these things go to a clean block ground. Simple as that. Doesn't matter where. The manual doesn't point it out I dont think. It's not rocket science. They dont need to be linked together. They are simply grounds. Clean tight connections to the block. Star washers are your friend here.

Thanks for the info...but....does the black wire from the Power Pack attach to the coil as shown in my photo....Is the coil considered a "clean block ground"?

Not on top, underneath. Block, star washer, ring terminal, whatever else, bolt, tighten with wrench.

Really appreciate your help Jake, but...today I got a chance to look at another of these outboards and the PP ground wire was attatched as the one in the photo above? I'm going to try tonight to turn her over and see if I got spark.

As the cowerdly Lion or cowerdly outboard electric mechanic (me) said : I do I do I do have spark. Got it to fire on ether. Not getting fuel now for some reason. Typical stuff checked, Tank, hose, fittings, Bulb hard, etc. Any ideas? Ran last fall. Has the big type fuel/water separator type filter. Very clean low hour outboard with high compression.

try removing fuel line at carb, squeeze bulb, fuel should squirt out hose. if yes reconnect hose, then squirt/spray pre-mix directly into carbs, try to start, does it fire, its so the float needles maybe stuck closed

Yes, I was laying in bed last night and thought it must be something I rushed or overlooked. I was a commercial fisherman useing outboards everyday for years, you think I would know better. And... lesson here is never trust what a previous owner tells you as it may be lies or just confusion and forgetfulness. I trusted him that the gas was only a year old, not old for non-ethanol like here as gas a year old is fine. Anyway found out I was not pumping gas but bilge water into my outboard. Gas had big time water in it. Dumped that tank, cleaned and changed lines and grained carbs and hooked outboard to my regular tank and it started like new. END of STORY hopefully!
