I have been having problems with my motor. It is a 1995 15 Hp evinrude, pullstart, it will start, but when you give it gas it dies out. The carburetor has been cleaned and fresh gas has been used. I had it over to my neighbors who fixes boat motors and it sat for over the winter over there and it started right up for him and idled fine had no problems, I took it out on the lake and nothing but problems. The fuel hose going from the gas tank to the motor is about 6 yrs old, doesn't seem to have any cracks in it, the bulb stays up just fine. I'm running out of things to try, my next desperate measure is buying a new gas line and tank. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm going camping over the 4th and would really like to get this going.

Thanks!!!!

Welcome to iboats!

I think I would test the fuel pump if that has not been done already. Pump the primer and then disconnect the fuel line either at the pump output or at the carburetor. Place a container to capture the gas and start the engine. See if the pump is working. This procedure should indicate the integrity of the fuel line and tank as well.

You are not even close to running out of things to try, In fact you have yet to do the basic tests, FUEL,AIR,COMPRESSION,TIMING,SPARK
(f.a.c.t.s) these are the basic test that should be done when trouble shooting a problem engine.

Re: 1995 Evinrude 15Hp problem

Thanks for the ideas, I mentioned the fuel pump to my neighbor mechanic and he wasn't sure if it was, because of it being so hit and miss if it runs. It seems if it sits for a while it seems to run fine for a while then starts acting up. He had it running for a full half hour in his tank and it never once died and was purring like a kitten, but I then brought it to the lake and it was acting up, couldn't keep it running, it's like it was starving for gas somehow. Because it's so hit and miss whether or not it runs is what is so confusing.

Thanks again for any help!

If you take it to the lake again try pumping the primer bulb when it acts up and see if that revives it. If it does then you have a fuel pumping problem and if it doesn't, you don't.

If you do have a fuel pumping problem it can be a problem in your fuel pump but could also be a problem in your fuel hose or fuel tank or even the connections. The easiest way to find out is to take it to the lake. If it does revive after pumping the primer bulb it will most likely want to die again in about 10 seconds. Just keep pumping the primer if it does. I would then open the tank cap to see if perhaps you have a tank venting problem and see if it still wants to die after that. If you have two fuel hoses, take them both and see if you can eliminate the possibility of the fuel hose.

I would also check that your fuel filter is not clogged up before you go. It could be that as well.
