Re: 1995 chaparral 1930 SS

Nothing wrong with Chap as a brand - they make nice boats. It's a little pricey for my area, but this time of year in Chicago I'd think that's right in the mix price-wise.

Buying a used boat is all about condition, and that one looks (in pictures) like it's in good shape. What you want to find out is if the engine/outdrive is functioning in good working order and if the hull is solid and safe. That's going to mean looking at the floor for soft spots, testing if the transom is solid, are the seats in good shape, etc.

Bubba posted a great thread on what to look for in a WATER TEST - and you need to do a water test. You want to drive the boat and see for yourself what shape it's in.

If you've not got the experience looking at boats yourself, consider hiring a marine tech/mechanic to help you out.

Re: 1995 chaparral 1930 SS

Back then Chap made two lines of boats the "SS" series and the "LE" series. LE was entry level and noticeably lighter and cheaper. That boat is an SS series, so that's good. Both used wood flooring, though. So...

Like any boat, check the floor for rot. Also the seat bases. Make sure those two jump seat things in the back aren't broken. Don't get upset that the carpet is all matted down, it was that way when it was new.

Sea trial it, with your anticipated load. That isn't any more than enough engine for a Chaparral SS series boat .

Looks like a nice boat, price is high, but that's what everyone asks for them.

Well the pictures certainly make it look nice. Given how old it is, I will just reiterate that you are 100% certain the sole has no rot. It takes only a bad season of poor storage to get the rot started. Of course you want to be certain that is has no winter damage to the engine as well. You'd be suprised at how common it is here in MN where we are only a touch colder than you. As for the boat itself...Chaps are a decent brand and they rarely hit the market here and when they do, the under 20 foot ones are swept up quickly. We are a state of low end Bayliners, Glastrons and Sea Rays so a Chap sticks out like a sore thumb. The larger ones regardless of brand here sit since they don't fit in a garage and large boats don't work on most lakes. If I were him, I'd put a high price on it too. It's literally the worst time to buy a boat but the best time to sell. I'd take full advantage of that as a seller. Guessing there aren't too many similar in that shape on the market.

Here is the original brochure in color from the model year 1995 Chaparral line up.

This time of year that looks like a real nice deal on a boat in exceptional condition for it's age. As mentioned, check carefully for soft spots and do a water trial. Good luck. Nice boat!

You might be able to talk him down a few hundred bucks, but my guess is in Chicago he'll get all of his asking price.

$4500 would be a good deal. $5000 wouldn't be bad, if it's really perfect. $5500 if you just "had to have it" and didn't mind paying too much.

I'm always willing to pay for superior condition and I'll bet many others are too.

Hopefully it wasn't a case of research myopia and he missed out. I hope the OP got to it first.

Nope guys wasn't me, haha sorry. You weren't kidding when you said it would get snatched pretty quick. Wow. Oh well, I'm just browsing for now anyways. Found another boat, Sea Ray, of which I posted a new thread with a link to it.
