Just purchased a 1995 Four Winns with a OMC Cobra drive. The engine was replaced with a 1989 OMC 502APRMED. What firing order should be used? The last owner could not get it running and sold the boat very cheaply

That looks like the firing order for the 1995 engine. Is it the same for the 1989 engine?

I found a 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8 firing order. I will try the firing order you posted, as that is the firing order that I just found on the sticker on the old exhaust.

It looks like the engine the prior owner installed is no good. Did a compression test today and none of the cylinders were over 50 psi. Had the wrong distributor in the engine also.

You can get a long block for about $1500 and swap the parts over to get it going.
You can also get 100% brand new engine (not rebuild) less the carburetor, starter, alternator and distributor for $2800 and do the swap in a few hours.
I think new 2 barrel carb is like extra $350

Some of the parts for the OEM distributor are available right here on iBoats http://www.iboats.com/Distributor/dm/view_id.1530347

But if you have the wrong one to begin with, you might have to get an after market marine dist.

If I was going to replace the entire engine though........ I would switch to a similar year 5.7L GM engine. Although that would require finding a flywheel cover, and other GM specific accessories, it would be a better prospect since GM engines are still used in boats.....

Rick

Thanks Rick, That sounds like too much work to switch over. The boat came with new manifolds, new carb, and a bunch of other new stuff. The original engine only had a rod knock. The guy had a 1989 engine in another boat that had been hit by a tree, with only 80 hours. He tried the swap and could not get it started and sold me the boat for $1000, with a 2 year old trailer. I could not pass up the deal.

Are you sure the motor is junk? could be the valves are over tightened? %0 across the board would be an engine that is totally worn out like 3000 hrs or run without oil.

I am going to take it apart soon and see what is wrong. I noticed that he had the wrong distributor in it. It sounded like something was grinding while cranking the engine. He said the engine backfired so many times when he was trying to get it started, he gave up! I feel better with the new engine.
