Hi All,

I need help from the mercury gurus. I seem to be missing something on setting the timing 90hp my 90hp 2 stroke. I was checking the WOT timing 1995 90hp Merc 90hp Merc and the indicator was pointing at ATDC degrees ATDC and was alarmed. This check was done as per the Mercury Factory Manual, cranking the engine with a well charged battery, spark plug leads or spark plugs removed and grounded, throttle ect ect ect ect. carb The carb sync, throttle cam, throttle stop, idle and idle stop were adjusted OK. The max advance screw had orange paint sealing it. I was using an inductive timing light on number cylinder (top) cyclinder. I promptly adjusted the max timing screw but the screw bottomed out and all I could get was between 4 to BTDC deg BTDC. I moved the linkage of the stator by hand and all I could get was a max advance of BTDC deg BTDC, no where 21 the 21 degrees. The timing pointer is plastic and formed with the flywheel cover and likely cannot move out of adjustment. The flywheel does not look like it shifted on the crank. Also the engine runs well over the entire 90hp low-mid (90hp low-mid rpm vibrations standard). However, since I guessed the timing point to put it back to (erring on the side of caution), I lost a MPHs of MPHs. Unfortunately, a thorough search of hasn't forums hasn't turned anything up. I even tried putting the timing light on the other 2 cylinders didn't that didn't help. Any ideas? What am I missing? Do I need to apply an advancing timing isnt that isn't described by mercury? I thank all in advance for your advice!

Just to add, I believe the idle timing was out also. I didn't write that number down when I did this a couple of weeks ago. Sorry for the confusion. I'll have to check that again.

Wide open throttle timing is adjusted with the engine running, in the water using a test prop or tied to your trailer. If you've messed with the linkage you best get things back to where they were. To much WOT timing makes holes in pistons.

Thanks for the warning Silvertip. Sound advice. A question though, does the starter cranking procedure of setting the WOT timing as described in the Merc Manual not work at all? If so thats a waste of money. I found that same procedure is in the SELOC manual too. Your patience and advice is greatly appreciated.

Basically with spark plugs removed and wires grounded:
Crank engine with starter motor and adjust maximum
spark advance screw to align the specified
BTDC timing mark on flywheel with timing pointer
(due to the advance characteristic of this ignition
system, this cranking speed adjustment will automatically
be reduced by 2° at an engine speed of
3000 RPM). Tighten locknut.

On the older motors, I know you can set the maximum advance without running the motor. I'd be surprised if it is any different for yours.

If you can't achieve that setting using that technique you can easily achieve 3000 rpm (in forward) with the boat secured to the trailer. With someone else at the controls, check the timing. You will then know if you have a problem or not.

Mercury Marine manuals all say to set the timing with the started motor, we have done it for years with no problems on some of the dist ign. CDs you needed to hook to a battery charger to time but the alternator driven ign. whats not needed. Try starting over and reread the manual and it should come out right, I have never found one off more than a couple degrees if they have not been tinkered with
