I disasembled and cleaned the carb, backed off the idle set screw linkage all the way, set the carb jet screw one and a half turns from fully seated and adjusted the timing so the roller is right on the center of the reference mark with the throttle all the way to slow.

But the engine, when started, revs way too high unless I pull the choke out which reduces the revs to about 1200 or so. If i put the choke back in the engine revs up again.

The engine was doing this BEFORE i did any of the above, and nothing i did improved the situation, so now i dont know what to do anymore.

Any ideas would be really appreciated.....
thanks,
dave.

I beleive you have something missing on your carb, a spring mabey or small lever not hooked up. Check your manual.

If your butterfly is allowed free movement it will open as engine runs drawing air into carb throat.

Take uh peak at it as motor idels. Should be almost closed tight.

Good Luck!

I'm not used to these newer engines....all the previous omc's I've had (about a dozen) are pre-1990, so this carb DID look quite odd. (My seloc manual only goes up to 1989,too.) It's got a flat black plastic cover on top, and under the cover there were a few extra passages and tiny holes I wasn't familiar with. Also, when I tore the carb down I was in a hurry and didn't remove the float needle and clean and inspect it like i normally do, but these symtoms dont appear to be associated with that i think.
PS this one isn't even my motor it's my friends who asked me to help him out...I should have known better but all the older omc's I've had were pretty straitforward and bullet proof little motors.........

Re: 1995 8hp longshaft idles way too high

Thanks for the advice, but how can a manual help me anymore? The troubleshooting sections, as we all know are a joke.
The one thing I needed a manual for the good folks here were able to help me with (removing the starter assembly without springing out my eyes)
The basics of outboard theory still apply...compression, spark and fuel.
But obviously, something ain't right here. My guess is that it IS CARB related, but I'm just asking for other opinions here.
I mean, it could be a BAD air leak somewhere, but where? (the carb to head gasket seemed fine, the bowl gasket seemed okay too....)
I might add that the last time I saw anything remotely similar to this was on my 1963 40hp johnson, but once I cleaned the carb and blew out HUGE chunks of grub from it, everything was fine....
ps. what exactly is it that you would like me to tell you that i already haven't?
thanks,

dave

Davey....when you took the carb apart, you should have noticed what's called the nozzle well. A white piece of plastic that the high speed jet is screwed into and it also has a black tube connected to it and the tube connects to another tube in the upper carb body. There are two gaskets associated with the nozzel well...the upper and lower gaskets. The upper is a round gasket and the lower which fits in the bottom of the bowl, is round on one end and square on the other. If either of these gaskets are cracked or worn enough to let fuel go through them, this could cause your problem. Did you notice them there? When you use the primer bulb, do you notice any fuel coming from the carb throat?

THANKS OBJ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes, there IS gas coming from the carb throat, which I attributed to the float being slightly misaligned. And no, I don't remember the nozzle well assembly although I was in a hurry and didn't take out the float needle either like I usually do. Not to say it wasn't there, but I don't think it was.
But the main thing is thanks to your generous and I think very accurate advice, I now have a direction to go in....
THANKS!
dave.
