What year lower unit will work on my 95 150 60 degree evinrude?. Someone told me one from the 1980's will work. Is there a year range and hp for that engine. My pinion gear disintegrated and so did the entire lower.

Welcome!!

Any V6 gearcase from 79 and newer will bolt up and work as long as you use your shift rod. There may have to be some mods made to the top of the driveshaft to make it work, depending on which gearcase you get.

If youre looking for a direct bolt on, check out the gearcases here on iboats.

I think what you are looking for is if you can put let say a 1988 150 lower unit on a 60 degree evinrude 150 intruder. I do not think that would work because the exhaust and water intake might not line up with your midsection. Also the gears could be different for that period. I would look for something more current.

Any V6 unit 1979 and newer will bolt up and can be used as long as you use the shift shaft from the original unit. The gear ratios on all recreational outboard V6 cases are the same.

As a matter of fact any V4 unit from 78 on can be used and any V8 unit as well. Naturally these gaes ratios are different.

Basically any V4, V6 or V8 unit with a screw-in shift shaft can be made to work. Personally I would look for something 93 and later.

Be very careful. There is 3/16inch difference in length and an additional seal groove on the drive shaft on pre 93 and post 93. The difference caused me a rebuild due to the load put on the main bearings (top especially). Measure what you presently have before bolting up another. Pay special attention to the engine spline end of the drive shaft and be sure they are identical.
good luck

Angus is correct, you will need to replace the driveshaft if you use an older than '92 lower unit.

Not only is the length different, the newer motors use an oring inside the crankshaft that seals the splines on the driveshaft. Older motors glued the oring on the driveshaft.
