My 40 hp Evinrude #E40RLEOD has alot of water coming out of the exhast when in the water. the diagram for my motor states that it is a baffle exhaust. it is located near the top of the motor facing away from the boat. when i put the ears on the motor to flush it there is no water coming out of this baffle exhaust. only when i put the boat in the water and the entire lower unit sits in the water does the water come out of the exhaust. it is not just a little water it is alot of water. does anyone know if this is normal or what the problem could be. thank you.

perfectly normal, it is an exhaust relief port, for when idling, when in water there is back pressure,,idling not enough force to overcome the back pressure, thus the water and exhaust exit there.

my next question is how do i adequately wash the motor with the ears if the water doesnt flow the same path as when in the ocean. thanks again for the help.

I prefer to rinse my engine in a barrel, that way the pump does all the water moving and rinses it real well.

You can still use the muffs if that is what you have and it will rinse also.

The water is still rinsing everything. Just not being blown out the holes. But it's in there.

also check the t-stat, if its hung open it will allow more water out of the idle relief, should have a heavy mist at idle in the water.
