Hello everyone, I purchased a 1995 Grumman pontoon boat with a Johnson outboard. The motor has not been run in 8 years. After changing out fuel lines and adding new fuel, the motor will run for 5 to 10 seconds and then die. What I did find is if I make an adjustment on the primer valve (the red colored control) to dump more fuel into the motor, that the motor will continue to run. Actually doesn't sound too bad when it's running. Turn the primer valve back and the motor dies. What's going on there? Is the carb not working and I'm overriding it by turning up the primer valve fuel?

Any help would be appreciated.

By turning the red lever fuel is dumped into the motor.---This fuel bypasses the carburetor.----That clearly points to the fact that the carburetor needs cleaning.---Very easy to do and usually no parts required.
