Ill start at the beginning - point form to get some background on the boat/issue.
- bought the boat in the spring - no test drive - ran good on the hose
- changed engine oil, spark plugs, distributor + cap
- wasnt able to check the drive oil as the boat was sitting too far up on the boat trailer to get the leg down and remove the dipstick
- took it out for the first little test run and get it back on the trailer to check drive oil
... didnt even make it back to the launch, made it less than 100' - had no power and engine died. couldnt get the drive back into neutral to re-start the engine - jammed in gear
- got towed to the ramp and pulled the boat out
- got it home and started to inspect
- shifter cable good
- drive seemed locked up - drained the drive oil.... only water came out - BAD!
- couple small flakes of metal on the upper and lower plugs
- was able to get the drive into neutral after hand rotating prop and playing with the shift arm
- unit grinds while being rotated
- took off the prop and noticed the bearing carrier is cracked - I suspect that's how it lost all the oil and filled with water
Im not exactly sure what drive I have (ill post a picture of the plate on the drive, hopefully someone can help identify). Im not sure what i should do at this point. Tear the whole lower drive apart to inspect gears + bearing? obviously will need to replace the bearing carrier as well but dont want to do that if the whole lower unit is screwed.
Any and all help is appreciated.
Any links to free PDF repair manual for engine and drive?
Thanks,
Jon
