Ill start at the beginning - point form to get some background on the boat/issue.

- bought the boat in the spring - no test drive - ran good on the hose
- changed engine oil, spark plugs, distributor + cap
- wasnt able to check the drive oil as the boat was sitting too far up on the boat trailer to get the leg down and remove the dipstick
- took it out for the first little test run and get it back on the trailer to check drive oil

... didnt even make it back to the launch, made it less than 100' - had no power and engine died. couldnt get the drive back into neutral to re-start the engine - jammed in gear
- got towed to the ramp and pulled the boat out
- got it home and started to inspect
- shifter cable good
- drive seemed locked up - drained the drive oil.... only water came out - BAD!
- couple small flakes of metal on the upper and lower plugs
- was able to get the drive into neutral after hand rotating prop and playing with the shift arm
- unit grinds while being rotated
- took off the prop and noticed the bearing carrier is cracked - I suspect that's how it lost all the oil and filled with water

Im not exactly sure what drive I have (ill post a picture of the plate on the drive, hopefully someone can help identify). Im not sure what i should do at this point. Tear the whole lower drive apart to inspect gears + bearing? obviously will need to replace the bearing carrier as well but dont want to do that if the whole lower unit is screwed.

Any and all help is appreciated.

Any links to free PDF repair manual for engine and drive?

Thanks,

Jon

Your tags tell you everything you need to know. You have an SX drive which is the same as a Volvo SX. You have an "MD" model. You can look on eBay for "MD" Volvo manuals although the drive itself didn't change much at all for a few years.

Sometimes you can find a set of manuals and sometimes just one at at time:

Here is the drive manual
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1994-Volvo-P...VZFea4&vxp=mtr

You would like to also get the engine manual and the electrical manual. The other manuals that are available for "MD" are not needed for the setup you have.

You can go here and get online ones. Here is the drive. I always want a paper version myself.

Looks like someone drained oil from drive. could have been water from winter cracking housing if the boat was not winterized properly. The drive needs oil. probably need tear down or replace. You may decide to look for a used drive on ebay. You most likely need a professional mechanic. The drives are too complicated and require special tools for most of us to repair at home.

Thanks for the responses. I know where to buy the manual was wondering if anyone had a link for free before I purchased.

The oil i believe leaked out through the cracked bearing carrier... or does that part not contain the oil.. not sure.

AS far as disassembly, I should probably tear the whole thing apart to inspect bearings and gears?

IF you decide to tear down on your own make sure you keep track of the shim placement and order for re-assembly. Make sure everything is in spec and perfect or replace part. make sure backlash is within spec. make sure to pressure test drive for leaks before returning to the water. remember this is an advanced level project I prefer myself to leave to the Volvo specialist.

Thanks.

I've worked on a couple outdrives before (omc/merc).

Does anyone know the exact model of my drive? Would it just be called a SX 185? There seems to be so many out there

sx-c although the sx-m should be the same exact drive which came out around 98.

Got the bearing carrier out with a homemade too and a little pursuation. Bearing carrier crack all the way down and the prop bearing outer race cracked as well. Bottom hears are in great shape.

Will be tearing apart the top gear housing as well to inspect gears/bearings.

Would it be wise to so all the bearings...?
