I recently boat a 1994 Vanguard Phantom 17' with a closed bow. It came with a Suzuki 150hp oil injected outboard motor. Noticed the tansom had build reinforced with a metal. I looked at the recommended max hp rating tag on the boat says 53kw (70hp) this presence a concern. I couldn't help notice that other similar boats of different years have large motors too. Does anyone know the specs/recommendations as what is allowed or recommended? Is this an issue where I hae to down-size the motor?

Re: 1994 Vanguard Phantom 17' Specs

hi luke.....welcome to iboats !

lol..... a buck fifty motor on a 17...is just a weeeee bit large......lol

it will only make a difference the first time you get stopped by the water cops....!

the metal on the transom could be due to rot......vangaurd was not the best of the boats especially in the early years....
but to hang that big of a motor off the back, you need to beef the transom.

Max Kw or HP ratings

Max Kw or HP ratings

I recently traded for a 17 foot 1994 Vanguard Phantom and it came with a reainforced tansom along with a (kw 111) 150hp. Later I found the tag specifing the kw rating of 53(70hp). My intentions is to sell the motor and down size to a 115 if I could. 70 hp is not enough power for skiing.

I'd like to get some input from owners who have a Vanguard Phantom 16' - 17' boats. Like to know what your boat tag fixed on the boat says for max. kw or hp rating and what they presently have for a motor.

I have a phantom BR. It has a 1989 90HP merc. It moves along at about 40 mph...but I would like a 115 on it. The extra cyclinder would help soooo much with tourque.
