Hi everyone, I?m new to this site. I?m looking at buying a 1994 Starcraft 1700, has a 90 hp Johnson, outboard. I thought the boat was sold in 94 with a Force? Owner is asking $3500.00. Does anybody own one of these boats? Are there any inherent issues, things to look out for? The boat is in good shape, is the price too high in your opinion? Is there any additional advice you can give? Thank you in advance for any information you can share.

Well you sure as heck don't want a Force. Price sounds fair to me if in good condition (your location has a great deal of effect on this). 90HP is great power for my 18' even though it's rated for up to 150. One of the reasons we're all so fanatical about these boats is that there really aren't any inherent issues with them. Even if all the wood is rotten it's not a huge project to replace.

Doc, if it had a Force engine you would have to pay me to take it. I think the boat would be the lesser of your worries if the hull is in good shape. Check the engine out good though. Compression, lower unit oil, etc. That would be where the 'money' is. Good luck, Dale

Re: Did Johnson Buy Force?

Thanks for the replys, owner tells me it's a Johnson 90 hp, would that be a Force? From what I've read Force was owned by Crysler then sold several times.

If its a 90hp Johnson then its not a Force. Cant tell you the history on Force but I dont think JohnnyRude ever had anything to do with them..... thank goodness.

Thanks for the confirmation CB, I?m feeling a little better about this boat. I haven't heard much good about the Force engine. From what I have read the 94 1700s were sold with a 90 HP Force, must have been discarded along to why. The thing I don?t like about the Johnson on this boat is that it doesn?t have an oil injector.Going to take a look at it tomorrow, If I pull the trigger on it I?ll post pictures.

Force motors make excellent swimraft/bouy anchors. :D I'll give you a pro about the oil injection....... its one less thing to worry about breaking, you mix the fuel so you know the motor is getting what it needs.

Doc, the best use of a Force engine is as an anchor. Be grateful your engine dosen't have oil injection. All the mechanics I know say if you have one, remove it and just add oil to your gas when filling up. If your engine is getting gas, then its getting oil. With an auto injection system the oil flow could stop and then bye-bye engine. I have seen too many engines burn up due to this and will never rely on them. Just too easy to add with gas myself. My 2 cents. Dale

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure that the rig in question is fiberglass.

Ezmobee's comment would apply to an aluminum boat. I agree that the Force outboards have a bad rep, probably for good reason.
