Hello to the PWC guys out there. I have been a regular watcher/poster on the mercruiser inboard/outboard forum and had loads of help there and now have a new project.

I just got given a 1994 SPI bombardier. I know nothing about these things except that I have ridden them a few times before and enjoyed it. This one looks like it has not been in the water for some time. I will try to take a picture tomorrow and post it as there are parts missing. It appears that some of the exhaust system is missing. There is a cannister at the rear port side and a large curved piece with one flange at the end which looks like it would bolt to a manifold off the engine which is not there. I still have to speak to the owner and find out if he still has them.
A couple of questions:
Is this a good model for the year? What do I need to look for to get an idea of whether I need to pull the engine or try to fire it up when I have the parts on?
Any basic tips for maintenance etc. Things to do before trying to start etc. I know not to run my boat motor out of the water, can these be run for any time out of the water?
Thanks, any help is much appreciated :)

check compression, clean the fuel system, see if the pump is frozen up yet, those old pumps swell up when they sit due to the cast aluminum housing, and get a service manual.that will save you a lot of guess work. also ask WHY he took it apart, that usually indicates that something was wrong.

Re: 1994 sea doo bombardier SPI

The person who had it was a young girl across the street and she left it at a friends house near a lake and the 'friends' had some trouble getting it to run and I think started trying to troubleshoot without really knowing what they were doing. Than was about 4 years ago I think.

I removed a plastic cover over what looks like a small flywheel and the engine turns over by hand so it's not siezed. You said check the pump is not frozen? After looking up a couple of posts I think you may be referring to a pump in the oil reservior, is that correct? This looks like it has some kind of metered oil injection into the cylinders? The oil reservoir is not empty so it did not run out of oil, well not unless the pump failed.
Another question, are there any good online sites for spare parts for these pwc's?

I am actually looking forward to working on this thing as I love to do this sort of stuff, I just finished doing an abandoned I/O ski boat. Looks like there isn't much to these also,

Thanks,

Austin.

The jet of water that makes the boat go is supplied by a water pump. When some pumps get old corrosion sets in and pump output slows because the corrosion is gumming up the insides.
Charlie

Looks more like an impellor in a housing, is that what everyone is calling the 'pump'?

I tried turning the crank by hand and it would turn about 1/4 of a revolution then come to a dead stop? So I pulled the 'pump' off and pulled out the drive shaft and the motor still did the same thing. By the way I had the plugs out so I wasn't just hitting compression. So now the motor is out and in the process of stripping to see what is broken. Both pistons are moving but it just comes to a dead stop in both directions after about 90 degrees of revolution. I am just bathing my kids then back out to pull the sump and see what is going on. I have the flywheel off and am ready to pull the final bolts and take a look. Hoping it is not a broken crank. Will post when I know...........

Well, I pulled the sump off and one of the connecting rod bearings must have lost lubrication as it totally tore up the bearing so the motor is basically shot. Looks like this will be a core for a rebuilt one.
Anyone know of a good place to get rebuilt motors for a good price???

Thanks Jeff, they have a white 587 for $699 which is not bad but I also just found this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...ategory=56422&item=4562499674&sspagename=WDVW

This is a complete engine rebuild package with the crank, pistons full gasket kit and seals for only $380 and they pay the shipping back for the crank core. Think I am going to go that route, that will save me a few dollars plus I enjoy doing rebuilds which is a plus.

By the way, what is the difference between the white and yellow 580's and the silver and blue/purple exhausts? I have a white motor with silver exhaust but the manifold is missing and the cone exhaust piece. Are the exhausts interchangeable for all of the 580's as I have seen some used, also on Ebay.

Thanks,

Austin.

you will need a pto tool and a roraty valve timing tool. check with www.jetkingparts.com for exhaust parts , the yellow was the first engines and were adapted from snowmobile engines. Also pay close attention to the pump on that ski as they would deform under the liner and lock up the works.
