I have a 1994 Ranger Trail Trailer that I would like to clean and repack the bearings on. It has surge disc brakes. Does anyone have a step by step procedure that would help me do this. I think you have to remove the brake calipers, but am not sure. Also what kind of grease should I use. If I decide to just introduce new grease to the bearings using the needle valve method, does it matter if the grease I use is not the same as the grease that is already in the bearings? Ranger couldn't have made it any more difficult to grease these bearings. Anyway, any help will be appreciated.

Thanks!!

Re: 1994 Ranger Trail Trailer Bearing Grease Procedure

Nothing about the Ranger bearings and brakes are unique to ranger. they are all pretty much the same.

If you are going to change the type of grease that is in there, you have to remove every trace of grease that is in there. What I mean by type is wnat the base material of the grease is. if you know the brand of the grease that was in there, you can find out the type and compare to what you plan on using.

You will have to remove the calipers to do this but usually that is just 2 bolts.

Here is a good explanation on how to repack your bearings:

Make sure you have a new grease seal before starting because the old one will be damaged when you remove it. Also have new cotter pins to replace the old ones.

To get the grease out of the old bearings, I use lacquer thinner in a well ventilated area outside of the garage. You can also inspect the bearing for pitting and wear marks.

I use a grease packer that you can get from an auto parts store and then I finish them off by using my hands.

Thanks for the information, Bruceb. I don't know what grease is in it now: so, guess I need to really clean the bearings. I appreciate your response.
