Somebody was telling me that the Ford 302's were not marine engines? Never heard that before. Also anybody had issues with these motors? Looking at a 1994 Four Winns 278 Vista cruiser with twin outdrives. Trying to do some homework before making an offer. Hour meter says 300+ hours on them. Was going to do a compression check before buying.

They are wrong.

If its truly a 94 then it has the SX drive which is the same as the Volvo.

Hopefully its not EFI.

Re: 1994 OMC with Ford 302

The only other thing I really question is the outdrives. They have repainted them but all the pitting is still there. My experience with corrosion on aircraft is that on aluminum you have to blend out the pitting to get rid of it. But this is a boat so I don't know and I don't know how thick the outdrive outer skin is. What is anybody elses experience on this? The pitting is not real deep and seems to be on a large area of the drive? Do they sand blast these and it takes of it or use some type of acid to etch it? My guess after seeing some overspray on transom, is they did it their self. Other than that, the boat is super clean with only one nick in the gel coat.

Personally, if the drives are not the SX versions, I would pass on the boat. I would also be wary if they are EFI since parts for them are getting scarce. The pitting of the drive wouldn't be as big a worry. Have a picture of the drives?

Post some FULL model numbers of your engines. The year of the boats doesn't mean it the year of the engine and drive.
Do you have a picture of the outdrive?

EDIT:
In case you don't have pictures of the drives. here are the choices.

As far as the cosmetics are concerned....

Either sand or bead blast to bare metal.

Etch and passivate with this....

Fill and fair with epoxy putty

Prime with two part epoxy primer like this...
http://pc.dupont.com/dpc/en/US/html/visitor/common/pdfs/b/product/nsn/Nason/491-35.pdf

Then paint with a catalyzed urethane paint like Dupont Chroma One.

Best if you do the surface prep than get it painted by a body shop with the proper equipment for spraying very toxic paint.

Do it right or do it over! (In my best BondO voice)
