1994 Mercruiser 3.0 fuel filter change. Broken screw

I tried to replace the fuel filter in the 1994 Mercruiser 3.0l engine. It is housed inside the internal fuel pump housing. To remove it I needed to unscrew the holding bracket and replace the filter. However, when I tried to remove the screw it was rusted in and broke. Should I remove the fuel pump or there is an easier way to remove the bracket? Thank you

You will probably need to remove the pump. Mount it in a vise and see if a wire style hack saw blade that has abrasive chips that will fit between the bail and the screw and cut it. They have them at Lowes or Home Depot. If you can do that get a #10- 24 screw and square nut and reuse the flat washer that seats against the filter canister. The canister is aluminum so be careful not to distort it.

Thx. That is what I thought. Just hoped there was an easier way to do this. But I dont think it will be a problem

Removed the pump, was easier than expected. Found two problems causing the engine running poorly, the screen filter in the carb was full of sandy debris. The fuel filter itself was also trash, was broken and in pieces. Also the fuel pump secondary line was clogged completely. Will test the engine run tomorrow. As for the tightening bolt replacement, I drilled it out and used a nut and bolt from my jetski battery, they appeared to fit perfectly.

Tried the boat on a lake. The problem with dying on neutral and low gear still persists. Im thinking about rebuilding a carburator now. Or should i look elsewhere? Also i found a rebuild kit for a 2bbl mercarb. Says it fits all 2bbl mercarbs from 86 to present. Is it the appropriate kit?

You do need a carb rebuild and the kit you found should work. Flush out all your lines, and check the antisiphon valve on top the fuel tank. Its a barbed fitting and the rubber fuel line connects to it. The is a ball and spring inside, make sure its clean and moves easy

As for the secondary line being clogged, if that's the tycon tubing (was clear now cruddy) you may have a fuel pump leak and not know it.

Don't be afraid to rebuild the carb. I never touched one in my life until I did my Mercarb and had great results. I watched the following video (and the subsequent second part) a few times before I dove in, but it's not that bad at all. Pay very close attention to detail and be patient. Check, re-check and re-re-check the float drop and level. No biggie.

I rebuild more than a couple carburaters before. Every older boat I had needed a rebuild. So this is not an issue. My main concern was if there could be any other problems causing this engine to die on neutral or low gear, while running fine on high fuel intake.

Other than your standard tune-up stuff, I wouldn't think there'd be anything else you haven't thought of or looked at. Probably your carb rebuild will get it.

Carburater rebuilt resolved the problem. The flow adjusting screw was bad, the rest was pretty clean but I still changed everything that came in the kit. The plungers rubber washer was a bit old. Now the engine is running great. Thank you
