No, the prop size determines WOT RPM.

It does show a rev limiter on the CD service manual I have.


I do also realize the prop can let the engine rev too high with too little pitch.
But that was not really the question...........But thanks for the response.

It it always possible for me to be wrong.

Merc has built some ignition switchboxes with an RPM limiter circuit inside, but I don't remember any of those being used on engines less than V-6

Merc has also used an external idle stabilizer module (smaller black box that wires into the switchbox) These stabilizers advanced/retarded ignition timing to stabilize idle RPM. Often would become problematic at WOT and most recommend removal.

If you have a small black box that wires into the ignition module and NOT the temp sender or oil system, then you can safely remove it, eliminating another potential source of ignition problems.
