Background: boat left me stranded last fall; was running fine 3/4 throttle about 4 or 5 miles out into the Gulf, and then bogged out and died. Would start up and run for about 10 seconds, and then die again.

So, I took it to a neigbohood "mechanic" who diagnosed the problem with water in the fuel for $250, then it was a broken timing cover (something under the flywheel) for another $100, and then a replacement stator for $125. Needless to say, every time I went back, this guy found something else wrong, and the fact he couldnt produce the old parts that he replaced made me think, THIEF!

So I had some words with this dude and brought the boat home. Took it out for the first time last Saturday, and it kept dying when it would start up. Before the breakdown, it would fire up and idol high until the temp came up, and would then come down to a lower RPM. Now it doesnt rev up, and then down; it just starts up, and putters out about 4 or 5 times until it gets up to temp.

Then, it kept dying in low idol (< 5 MPH). If I tried to dock it and go from low idol into neutral or reverse, it would die.

Needless to say, I dont want to go back to this "mechanic"... anyone have any idea of what it may be? Plugs are a year old, could it be that simple? Or, do I need to adjust the idol screws? He did tell me that one of the carbs was leaking fuel and one of the screws was all the way out or in, which caused it to get no fuel at high RPMs.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Not sure just which engine you have. The 115 engine in 1994 was a crossflow type-I don't believe that they were labeled "faststrike." There was a faststrike 115 which came out in 1995 as a looper engine, completely different from the crossflow. Perhaps you can post the model number off the engine serial tag to clarify the exact year.

well your description of problems and comments from the previous mechanic are all over the lot!!!!

you need to start from square one and diagnose this problem one step at a time...

since you have a leaky carb

id start with a complete carb rebuild for all the carbs....make sure all the passages are clean and blown out , and all the needle and seats are new and or clean...all new gaskets. set them to factory spec...an reinstall....

what happens then determines where you go from there...

if that mechanic wa sadjusting everyhting he could get his hands on...it might be wise to do a link and sync...to establish all the linkage relationships are good

then moving forward you can rule out certain things if you still have problems...

if you have a fast strike the model number would have a GL in it.., but if you are off one year it might be a 95 then your model number would be J115GLEOC, if it is a fast strike...

i am guessing you are calling it a faststrike because of the decals on the motor cover....unless someone bought decals and put them on an older motor...you probably have a newer motor than you think

good luck

Thank, Bob. These are all of the issues that were supposedly already fixed by the guy i took the boat to. Now that I have it back, the dying at low idol is the issue. I dont think he changed the stator and just said he did, but who knows. I'm not sure what you mean by link and sync.

link and sync is a short term used to describe the timing adjustment of the throttle travel in relation ship to the elecrical timming advance.

they are a function of each other through their travel and when the throttle has been moved "X" amount...the electyrical timing should be at "Y"

if the linkage for the carb throttles was just turned in or out on their own..then the syncronization to the timing dvance could be way off...

its is technical and important and slightly complicated

and you really need a factory manual to follow along.

and your motor has an optical timing sensor...which makes it more difficult to adjust.

you may need some specialized electrical tools to do the job...thus a prime reason your neighbor bothced the job.

good luck

If you dare there is usually enough play in timing linkage to advance it while idling on muffs. If this makes it run better then link and sync is definately called for.

The link and synch on that engine is fairly easy, but as mentioned the optical sensor calls for a special tool called 'ignition analyzer'.
Go here do get more info about it: http://www.maxrules.com/fixomcoisignition.html
You may however do the basic check with a timing light on each plug wire to check that you have spark. Be a bit careful using an open and un-loaded spark tester on this system as it may damage the power pack!
This was the first year of the OIS system, and I have honestly had quite some cases where I had to replace Optical sensor, stator and powerpack to make it all work, despite stator being within test requirements. If at the edge of tolerances, you may be in trouble.

Re: 1994 johnson fast strike 115 dies at idol

CDI recommends changing the powerpack and sensor together..also using only champion QL78YC plugs and using the newer gray colored spark plug wires, instead of the older black ones. also make sure the RF protector plate is installed between the power pack and the coils, also check the plate for burn marks where the coils may be shorting out. I think the 94 stator will work if it is in good shape..but I think CDI offers a kit with stator, powerpack, sensor, and plug wires..you can call them and ask about it. just google, cdi electronics.
if you do post number 2 you will be able to figure it out.
