I have been fighting an idle and mid-range problem for some time on my 94 Johnson 50hp 2 stroke engine. I have had a professional mechanic working on it and he is now scratching his head. It runs rough at idle and will eventually die at idle. I can get it started in the neutral mode with the power lever up to the midrange. When I pull it back to idle quickly and put it in gear quickly and push the throttle forward I can get the engine to oprate okay but it runs rough through midrange up to about 4000 RPM and then it runs fine from 4000 RPM up to 5500 RPM. We have performed tthe following:
1) Installed new spark plugs.
2) Installed new power pack.
3) Removed both carburetors, disassembled and clean, and installed new kits in both.
4) After new kits installed, mechanic made several adjustments and we still have the problem.

Any ideas?

have you done a linc and sink? check the timing?

sounds like to me the timing is way off.... seems that the idle timing is way retarded thats why you have to advance the throttle... follow the link below on how to set the timing
