I have a 1994 johnson venom 225 that was pre-owned. the previous owner always had problems out of the hole shot and would sometimes hit the choke key to pull up skiers. b4 i bought the boat from him he had carb kits done along with jets being replace and some fuel lines changed.
I am having a problem with it idling and just out of no where dying on me. No problem wto
but sometimes again on hole shots I will punch it and get that bogged down problem then it will stall. It will eventually get-i-up after restarting and bringing rpms up then trowing in
gear no problem. Is this a timing issue, comprssion prob or what it just had new plugs also last spring with new valves. or is this something i will just have to live with b/c
its a darn johnsom

Re: 1994 JOHNSON 225 VENOM IDLE PROBLEMS

Welcome to the forums SKYMOOKIE.

Well...lets see what we can do for that "darn Johnson" :D

First and foremost...if yer' goning to do the work yer self...get a good service manual. It will tell you tons about the engine and will pay for it's self in the long run. OEM are preferred and can be gotton at any Johnny/Rude dealer. Generics can be gotten directly from iboats.

Poor idle and bogs down outta the hole can be caused by a few different things. Flooding, sync and link needs an set, you may enen have a couple cylinders not firing until WOT.

First, take a compression test. Make sure all cylinders are within 10 to 15% on compression. Do a decarb if they look spooky and then do another compression test.

Do a spark check. This will insure the ignition system is up to snuff. Each spark should jump a 1/2in gap with a hot blue/white spark.

Check your high end timeing. Do this on the water or there is a dry land way to do it. (make a search for setting timing here on the forum. It's been posted several times.)

Your kinda at a disadvantage with the carbs cause you don't know if when they were rebuilt the wrench did a good job. Your problem could be caused by left over crud in the carbs. Take another look at the fuel system and check for lose fuel lines or dried up hoses. Make sure the fuel tank is vented good.

Or...you could take it to a wrench you trust, tell him the problem and let him fix it.

But still get the manual.

Hope we've helped. Most likely some of the other guys will give you some ideas to, so hang in there. You've come to the right place for help. :D
