1994 Johnson 150 Acceleration Problem

I have a 1994 Johnson 150 Faststrike engine on my Ranger Bass Boat. The engine runs great most of the time. After I have used it off and on for a day or two, it will bog down or stall after I start it and try to "come out of the hole". It never does this if the engine is cold. I then have to slowly accelerate or push in on the key to give it a shot of gas to keep it from dieing on me. It only does this after it has been run a couple of days. The fuel bulb is not soft. Can anyone tell me what might be causing this? It has done it since new in 94. I took it back to the dealer back then and I believe he put larger jets in the carbs, but am not sure.

Thanks

If hitting the primer aids it from bogging, shes starving for fuel, which would normally lead me to think jets/carb or fuel pump etc... But temperature sensitive?? Im not sure...I think I would of questioned the dealer when I got it new. Could a problematic fuel pump or diaphragm cause this, Im not sure. Hopefully someone will jump in

Thanks, Hightrim. I should have pursued it further when under warranty. Anybody else have any ideas?

Thanks!

i would have pursued it under warranty 13 years ago, i doubt you will get any warranty help now. it was an OMC warranty, not BRP.

I am not wanting any warranty. I am just curious what might be the problem.

Thanks!

By chance, is your on-board battery charger a 3 - bank?

Take along a volt meter and check the main engine battery once in a while, a weak, or dead, charging system and your battery voltage may be fallilng off in a couple of days, plugged in at home it comes right back up and everything seems normal til you run without charging a couple days.

Just an idea, something to check out.

Charlie, I don't have an onboard charger - just use portable chargers. I appreciate your input. I am open to all suggestions.

Thanks!

Charlie, could you please explain how a weak battery would cause my engine to do what it is doing. I don't understand the system well enough.

Thanks!

What is your top rpm when running wide open (wot)?

Re: 1994 Johnson 150 Acceleration Problem

Around 5200 but I have never actually let it get all the way to WOT as the lake I was trying to do it on it too short. Anyway, I believe I could get 5500 out of it with a little more room and some tweaking of the trim. What are your thoughts on the acceleration problem relating it to WOT?

Thanks,
Ron

Re: 1994 Johnson 150 Acceleration Problem

I think I might have found my problem the fuel line at the top of the water separater/fuel filter was not clamped. I believe I was sucking some air at times. The clamp was there, but had never been tightened.

You mean that clamp was loose since 1994?
I'd replace the fuel lines.
Check the cone filter between the carbs for junk.
