Is the foam dry all the way through or just on top? At a minimum, you should core-sample the foam all the way down to the hull, in several places. If it is wet, it is most likely to show that down near the hull.
Those almost look like engineered stringer. The radii where the stringers meet the bulkheads would very much like they did in my 97 Larson, which also had engineered stringers. reflects the case, you got very lucky, because they do not contain wood in the stringers. They would be heavy fiberglass filled with foam.
Thank you JASinIL2006 that makes me feel a lot better
the foam is all good. I have the wood ready cut out for replacement. When I screw these boards back. Is it okay to screw them on to the fiberglass? I bought bondo resin fiberglass. Is it necessary to apply fiberglass fabric on the wood or is resin good enough?
You will need fabric, too. The resin by itself doesn’t help much. Without fabric or mat, it has no strength and will crack. I don’t think Bondo is a good choice; it contains talc which will absorb water. What you really want is a polyester laminating resin.
I used both stainless steel screws (which require careful pre-drilling, if you do in fact have fiberglass stringers) and thicken resin with chopped strand fiberglass mixed in (aka ‘peanut butter’) to attach the deck.
Did you test your stringers to confirm they are not wood? You should drill a few holes to make sure...
i know right. Right now i am waiting on my polyester laminating resin to arrive. the front pedestal seats were just drilled thru the wood and a stainless steel plate under. any recommendation on how would be the best way to set those seats in.
Do you mean as a covering? If so, I can't imagine using that stuff on a boat. I don't think it would wear very well, and then you'd have a real mess trying to remove or cover it. I'd never use that stuff.
