I bought this boat dirt cheap and new it had problems but i am very mechanical and a tech, but this is not my field of expertise. First thing i did was buy service Manual and read the whole thing.
Original problem upon purchase from seller : Would not plane out or go over 2500 RPMs::
Service Manual - In slow circuit mode.
Things I have done ( was a winter project)
Freeze plug was out on port side. Upon removing motor mount and oil filter to fix this learned there was no oil spilling from oil filter, checked dip stick barely touched the tip of it .
Since freeze plug was out, pulled plenum and intake to see if block cracked : looked good. Did compression check all good, checked timing #1 up compression stoke , rotor on #1 wire and on 0 degrees harmonic balancer.
Cleaned Plenum and found questionable vacum line. Replaced ALL
Ohmed out injectors , and wiring harness, ohmed all wiring from sensors back to the 60 pin ECA and tested all sensors on lower intake, blew out fuel lines.
Had no fuel pumps so bought 2. low pressure at fuel tank and high pressure at rear on resevoir and installed new fuel filter/water seperator, also took resevoir apart to clean and check float and needle valve. I did a lot of extra work simply because i had never worked on a Ford engine ,and wanted to know it inside out.
Engine started right up. idle great and went up to 4000 or 4500 RPMs in Neutral (until speed limiter cut it back?) in YARD.
On water was rough but would plane out. Did not know what previous owner did SO:
Rechecked my stuff found i had put distributor shaft back in one tooth off.( Had marked all before removing lot of good that did LOL)
Reset timing with inductive type timing light .
I have removed the shunt to set base timing to 5 Degrees BTDC according to manual. But manual states that when i put shunt back in I should see the timing advance. I do not see this happening. From reading manual if i am interperting it correctly , the advancing of the timing is controlled by the TFI module. If some one with more experience can confirm this for me i would appreciate it. Also, from research the TFI module is no longer available, however an IGNITION CONTROL MODULE for any 1994 5.0 Cobra Ford MPEFI, should work ???? If i am incorrect in this train of thought please correct me here also.
Boat runs great , shoots out of the hole, handles great and love it, BUT, when idling go to WOT shoots out of the hole but after 50 yards bogs down , if decrease to 3/4 throttle will pick back up to 32MPH , try going to WOT from that position and bogs down again.
2nd sceanerio : if cruising at 10 OR 20 MPH and go to WOT bogs immediately.
I feel the timing is not advancing , any suggestions would be appreciated
PS: I have owned several boats and never broke down on the water , work and PM boat in yard , PLAY ON THE WATER
