I put the new stator on my motor and it started right up. Now I want to set the timing. It was tuned up with the old stator and might not have the right timing set. The timing at idle is 10 deg. Should I set the timing at higher speed? And what deg should it be?

Prestolite CD 30 degrees, Thunderbolt CD 32 degrees. Final check is at 5000 RPMS loaded engine. Does engine have timing decal with specs?

You lost me. I don't know if it's a prestolite or thunderbolt. What's CD stand for? It has timing marks on the fly wheel and a chalk mark a 34 deg. It rides rough at idle speed in forward. I'm new at this.

How did you get new sator? were the wires on new stator same as old stator? Can you describe the powerpack and coil? Are the powerpack and coil 1 unit with the sparkplug wire attached. The info I have is that this engine came with 2 different ignition systems and you have to know which one to buy parts or adjust timing.

The wires on the new stator were the same as the old one. Two yellow, blue and blue/white and red and red/white. The power pack is a seperate box installed next to the starter. Coils are seperate from the power pack. I got the stator from Seiler Marine

Sound like Thunderbolt by Merc, which would be 32 degrees. I only have a generic manual I would look for Force manual for specs, because with the chalk mark you have, you now have a choice of 3 numbers. It may be 2/3 weeks before I can look at OEM manual.

Re: 1994 Force 40hp timing

someone said about taking the prop off and checking the timing at WOT that way. Will that work? I'm thinking that the chark mark should have been at 32 and this guy marked it at 34 counting each mark as one deg. He had some good ol boys tune it up.

If you run engine unloaded (noprop) at 5000 rpms it might throw parts out the side of the block. Disconnect timer linkage advance timer to stop, engine at idle, check timing will be 2 to 6 degrees slow. This will get you close. Then check at 5000rpms loaded. the timimg will increase with rpms. Final check should be at 5000 rpms.

SET THE TIMING AT IDLE TO 10 THEN CHECK
TOTAL ON THE LAKE OR IT WELL COST YOU SOME
MONEY.
