1994 Evinrude 40 hp shift linkage removal

I ordered a manual for this motor yesterday. Im trying to replace the water impeller and cant find the place to disconnect the shift rod. he said it had been replaced at the beginning of the season but I don't take chances.I checked most of the places I know of. Thanks Yall !

You can do this one of three ways...

1. If you are really good put a six inch 1/4"drive extension on a ratchet. Put a 3/8" or 10mm (cant remember for that year) swivel socket on the end of it. From the port side go in under the staryer and carb and unscrew the shift link pin.

2. Remove starter and do as above.

3. I cant remember what year the lower cowles split in half. Sometimes on later models you can split the cowles and get to the pin but i think that came with the etecs.

Thanks for the help! found it and its all ready to go. I think my Johnson 75 stinger was the same way after you said that. I took the lower carb and starter off and it made it a lot easier
