1994 Bayliner rendezvous no power

So I just bought a 94 Bayliner rendezvous with a 3.0 mercruiser. I had it out on the water a week ago and it was running fine, then all of a sudden my electronic alarms started going off even though all gauges looked fine. I opened up the engine compartment and my belt had jumped off. When I tried to put it back on I tried to tighten it to where it was but I couldn't get it that tight. That got me wondering some things about it. Once I got it on and tight I started it back up but my alarms didn't go off and I saw water coming out from around the valve cover. My thought was I need to get this back to shore so I drove it to shore and put it on my trailer. I guess after all this my question would be do I have a bad head gasket. When I was driving it to shore I was losing power pretty fast. I haven't had time to do any compression tests or anything. I just brought it home and it's sat. Also how much gear oil would this go through (the tank towards the top of the motor that say gear oil). I would appreciate any and all help.

Thanks

What is on your dipstick?

Most likely, unless you were running it for hours on end, only a cracked block will fill a motor with water.

A properly sealed outdrive will use no oil at all. An outdrive with a tank will raise and lower the level in the tank a small amount as the outdrive warms and cools. Shouldn't *use* oil.

So I was finally able to get to the boat. There is no water on the dipstick just oil. However my belt is off again from the last outing even after I put it back on. Once it cools off I'm gonna run a compression test and see what that tells me.

So 1 will be the front of the boat and 4 is aft. Compression in 1 and 4 is like 135, 2 is 100, and 3 is 125. I hope this doesn't mean a new motor

Ayuh,..... #2 is awfully weak,...... 100 psi is usually rebuild time,........

Run that cylinder up to Tdc, 'n pressurize the cylinder with compressed air, 'n listen for the leak,.....
Could be a bad valve,.....

A head rebuild is better than a motor rebuild,....

So the question isn't if you see water on the dipstick, since the water will be at the bottom and the oil at the top is all you see when you pull the stick.

You said you saw water coming out the valve cover. A better description might be useful here. How much water? From exactly where? Foam?

I assumed if water was coming out then the block was full of water. If so, when you pull the stick it will show way over full. Still won't show anything but oil.

I haven't gotten my kit yet to pressurize the cylinder. I was just wondering where the boat had almost no power before this would the wiring harness on the 3.0 and the 4.3 match up or would I need to redo it all, and is the outdrive the same and would match up (alpha 1).

Ayuh,..... If yer thinkin' of swappin' out the driveline, you'll need a Completely dressed 4.3l, 'n it's drive,.....

The outdrive gear ratios are very different,.......

'n ya need a Completely dressed bobtail motor for all the little extremely expensive bits that make a pickup motor, a Boat motor,.....
The wirin' harness will be native to the bobtail motor, 'n the plug on the boat side should match perfectly,.....

Thanks Bondo just trying to weigh all my options. I should be able to do the pressure test this week so if it's major I might have to do a swap. So sense in rebuilding a motor when I'd be happier with a bigger one for more power towing the kids on the tube
