My 1994 5.7 4 brl mercruiser, while running on a hot day, when I pull back to an idle, will stall and won't start. After cooling for anywhere from thirty minutes to two hours it will start and run just fine. (It has done it twice in one day). Most of the time it will then run for the rest of the day without problems. On one occasion I was able to get the engine to restart by staying on the starter and pumping the gas. I've checked the carb and it is not flooded. I have change the fuel filter (twice). I've installed a new coil. The fuel vent is not clogged. The boat runs good at top end so I don't believe it is the fuel pump. It does not stall when running above an idle. Any suggestion?

I took it into the shop and they replaced the sensor assembly. I believe my problem is solved. :)

What grade fuel are you using?

Does the owners manual call for 87? The additives in the 93 may be causing vapor lock. Try the grade that Mercruiser recommends.

Good luck!

There are several service bulletins about that. Your dealer should be able to pin point the problem.

Good luck!

Sounds like the idle circuit to your carb is clogged. That is why it will start when you pump the gas, you are overiding the idle circuit when you do this. Probably just crud in the float bowl. My Quadrajet (Quadrajunk) has done this to me last year. Cleaned the carb, put in a new kit and is fine. Planning to put on a differnt carb this winter and get rid of the quadrajunk.

Will the engine restart if you turn it off intentionally? if so, then the starter is most likely still good.. How hot is the engine when it stalls out. anything over 170 degrees could be a vapor lock occuring may want to check the raw water pump engine may be overheating.... timing may be off also......good luck

Engine is running at 140 degrees. Had timing set last October and I don't recall ever having the problem when I shut the motor off myself.

Thanks

Pal, I have had the same problem- I couldent even get mine to start when it was cold if I didint catch it on the first try. For me it is the choke on the carburator was not opening and the engine acted like it waas flooded. Next time you go out pull the flame arestor to see how the heat coil operated the choke then either place a screw driver in the choke/open or have some one hold the side lever. If the engine aint getting no oxygen to burn more gas wont help it either ( I thought it was flooded and seen gas pour out hte top of carb). BTW- That little tiny spring (heat coil) packs one helluva price. The best I've found is $45.

gl2u

I had the semilar problem it could be something in the fuel tank casuing it to block the line and after a few miniute after stalling it floats away then gets sucked back when running....
