1994 4 winns OMC fluid change

I changed the fluid in my outdrive 1994 4 Winn's 180 5.0. I took lower middle and upper plugs out. I filled from the bottom but at no time did any fluid come out the center vent. I drained 64 oz. and pumped back it about 70 and the dip stick shows over full. Should I drain some fluid out and why did no fluid come out the middle vent. With putting in 64 oz. do I need to worry about air and is there a way to purge it out? It only has 2 bolts where the dip stick is and they sit lower than the dip stick. Thank you.
I do think I have the OMC/Volvo.

What is your model number? You may have the OMC/Volvo joint venture drive. Refilling that model is different than the older cobra dog clutch drives. 1994 is when they came out so you have to know what you have. Do you have the shift linkages under the drive cover?

The 94 was a mix of Volvo and OMC
Get a manual for that year.
The Volvo/OMC is filled from under the shift cover.
It has a plug(allen head) just above and to the right of the center of the shifter.
The drain plug is installed and it's filled from the plug and tested with the dipstick(oil indicator rod).

Incorrect info! It is not filled from under that cover. That is the level/vent plug. The OMC/Volvo joint venture drive is filled from the bottom of the drive until it comes out the hole under the cover.

Yes the shift linkages are under the cover. I do think I have the OMC/Volvo

Here are the instructions from the manual. You should get a manual if you don't already have one.

Make sure you always replace the o-rings every time you change the gear lube on all the plugs.

I always run Merc's and I filled the lower unit with Mercury High Performance Gear Lube SAE 90. I feel that should be ok?


I sold this boat to a friend and I just want to make sure everything is properly serviced. It was my daughters boat so don't think she ever serviced it in the couple years she owned it.

I already changed the fluid, put 64 oz. and dip stick reads good. I did not take out the center vent behind the case when I did it. Hadn't received a reply as of yet when I did it.

Well...the spec says 75w-90 gl5 synthetic. I believe the Merc fluid you used is equivalent but others can join in to say for sure.

Ayuh,.... I donno which is which, but Merc has both W90, 'n 75W-90 Syn-oil,...

I run Mobil 1, 75W-90 Syn-oil in mine, 'n those I service,... None of which are OMCs though,...
