I am looking at picking up a 1993 Seadoo GTS this weekend. Have they been a reliable ski in the past years? I really don’t want anything that I need to wrench on. I just want something to take on rides, I’m not looking to jump waves or do spin outs or anything in that nature. Also what motor and horse power are in those ski’s. Just incase I want to pull a tube or something. Thanks

Any ski from 1993 is going to require wrenching. Thats 12 years ago!

I'm ok with some wrenching. I guess my question is was there any major costly problems during there time. Is there anything that goes wrong with them often. I just see a lot of people wrenching on Seadoos on the shore lines and ramps.

they have a 587 engine it's a simple one to replace and not expensive, that old of one may have a bad seal in the rotary compartment see if it smokes a lot when it first starts, they had a old style pump and the housing corrodes pretty bad in salt water use, they also break driveshaft seals if they are not greased on a regular basis, the hull handles like a bath tub probably the worst hull design sea doo ever came up with, and the fuel lines deteriorate from fuel addatives and gum up the carb.it is probably worth around 500 dollars if it runs ok, they also strip driveshaft splines in the p t o if it isn't greased regularly, they had a problem with the fuel tanks also but I believe sea doo recalled those tanks.

Thanks that is the type of information I was looking for. I decided to pick it up. I did test drive it and it did seem to spit and sputter and then all the sudden take off. So I will start with a carb job. also I noticed a loud banging noise so after returning I found that the two motor mounts on the left side were broken. So I will be purchasing new motor mounts. What would cause them to break like that? It only on the left side. Also do you know the Hp of this motor. Thanks for the info

It is not unusual for the rubber to deteriorate with time and exposure to water, fuel residue, etc. Even normal vibration, after 12 years. I have replaced a couple of these on different skis, and cars also.

I didn't think the motor mounts were a big deal. I will try and pick up a new set. Do I need to do anything with realigning it or can I get away with using the shims that are there? Thanks

be sure to use the shims exactly as you found them, the pan engines are notorious for motor mount problems and the rattle will probably always be there when it idles, I would replace the entire fuel line system and bypass or replace the fuel selector switch, it is also a common problem, while you are at it add a good fuel filter to the fuel line from the tank to the fuel pump.

I will do that. Just out of curiosity whats wrong with the fuel selector valve? Due they allow air in? Is that the problem with them? Thanks for all the help. One other thing Is it difficult to block off the oil injection. Given the age of the ski I don't think I want to take a chance any longer with the oil injector.

Disregaurd my last post. I found out that the diplacemtent for this motor is 580.7 so it's called the 587 motor.

to do the oil block off corectly you need to pull the rotary valve cover and remove the oil pump, then place a block off plate where the oil pump goes, you also need to loop the little oil nipples on the cover together, that stops any vacume leak, just use one of the oil lines and hook it from one to the other.next you may want to add a wind to the return spring on the carb as the throttle tension will be reduced once you eliminate the oil pump, you don't want the carb to hang open unexpectidly, and you must retain the oil tank and oil in the tank to lube the rotary valve. you can just fill the 2 big hoses and loop them together but you need to keep an eye on the oil in the lines, it is best to just leave the tank and keep oil in it. the selector switches usually get clogged up and they also allow air leaks, best to toss it run from the reserve pickup off the tank
