Hello,

New to this board. Just bought a used 1993 Monark Suncaster 240 Fish
with 90 HP Mercury outboard.

Here are some pics of the boat:

As you can see the wrap around seat needs some work and it needs to be cleaned up.

The aluminum side fence panels have a whiskey dent in the rear back corner
where the previous owner must have backed into something.

I have done some research and I can either go back with the same aluminum
with a painted white surface (see here):

http://www.pontoonspecialists.com/p-86-white-gloss-skin.aspx

OR

I can go with this stuff which is a vinyl flashing material which does not scratch and is impervious to the elements:

$109
http://www.restorepontoon.com/pontoon/pc/Vinyl-Fence-Paneling-14p79.htm

another cheaper source for what looks like the same product:

$64
http://www.diyhomecenter.com/duraflash-vinyl-flashing/detail.aspx?iid=10020

anyone ever use this stuff?

i have an 88 20 monarch. i would go with Vinyl, but check the thickness of both products. you also may find just a section of aluminum to fit that area, then paint it. this is just regular semi gloss rustoleum.

Pro Trim:

http://www.alumapole.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PLST&Store_Code=A

Thickness = 0.060" (I called them for the thickness- not listed on web)

http://www.diyhomecenter.com/duraflash-vinyl-flashing/detail.aspx?iid=10020

Thickness = 0.015"

I called the guy at diyhomecenter to cancel my order and he said he has been selling a lot of this stuff for pontoon fencing and he thought it would work so I am going to go for it. He said I coudl return it if I thought it was too thin, but he said the it is still rigid enough for a fence and much easier to work with (cutting etc.).

anyway - wanted to pass along the info.
I will let everyone know how it works.

I think I would use that to overlay what is on it, don't think you will have any luck actually getting the old panel out, even the guys at work that do rails all day only get it 25% of the time.

That panel is inserted while the rail is straight then it is put through the bender/roller which traps the panel.

Maybe use some colored pop rivets on the top and bottom, noone will ever know the panel behind it is dented.

Wow - I did not realize that, (I have not actually seen the boat in person yet - it is being delivered today, bought it off of craigslist). So, if I understand what you are saying, you recommend just cutting the the vinyl to fit the panel on the outside (inside of the tubing frame) and riveting through the existing aluminum plate.

You are correct, it is alot less to do too.

To remove the rail you have to pull the furniture to get to it so an overlay is just alot easier and like I said, unless you tell someone they will never know.

Tashasdaddy: This is the boat I was referring to when I inquired about the front fishing chairs. I went back to the other category to ask the question because I knew it would be an off topic question here. The pictures you posted to demonstrate the use of the vinyl fencing on the 88 Monarch.........Is that your boat? If so, I'm asking for information about where you got those front chairs.

Re: 1993 Monark Suncaster 240 Fish - Fence Panels Dented and Ripped

rentprop1,

I am not sure what kind of ladder it is but it looks pretty cool - it came with the boat, I will take a look and find out what brand it is for you.

I just received the vinyl fence material today, it is rather thin but since it is not structural and more of a veneer, I think it will turn out okay. I will let you know how it turns out. Not sure how I am going to cut it out yet. I was think about making it larger than it should be and tucking under the aluminum square tubing railingthen riveting to the aluminum panel. Anyone have any tricks?

Also, I base-lined some things over the weekend:

1. Changed the impeller (i forgot to move the shift to forward when we pulled the lower unit and stabbed it after the impeller change and had to re-stab the lower unit after realizing I did not have reverse or neutral and it started in gear)
2. Changed the gear oil in the lower unit gear case - very few metal shavings and thankfully no water (milk).
3. Got the license plate without a title or registration from previous owner - had to have the state police inpect it and notarize a "Hold Harmless Affidavit" for the DMV and I was good to go . Now all I have is register the boat.
4. After all of the administrative stuff - I will have the 3 cushions you sit on for the L-couch re-upholstered. I got a price of $75 per cushion from a local upholstery guy. The captains chair cushion is tearing but I am going let it ride for a season.

Re: 1993 Monark Suncaster 240 Fish - Fence Panels Dented and Ripped

I removed the icebox/sink and faucet bax form the deck and there is a large access hole (30"H x 18"W) in the front of the helm/ console where the icebox/sinkl was covering it up. Can you buy the vinyl covered doors for the helm/ console so I can cover this access hole. Anyone have any ideas on how to make a door that will look good?

Also, an update I have all of the vinyl flashing covering riveted to the side of the fence. It looks pretty good.

Could you post pics of the work? a before and after would be great but I will just take an after if you have it. I am planning to refurb my boat fence, and I think I am going to do the vinyl over the old aluminum.

Re: 1993 Monark Suncaster 240 Fish - Fence Panels Dented and Ripped

Hello,

Coming in a little late on this thread but will tell you how I did mine. I used the 2' X 50' roll of aluminum trim coil from the local "insert big box chain store name here". It was a vinyl coated aluminum product. I removed all the railing, drilled out all the rivets, cut my new trim to size and screwed it on with small stainless steel sheet metal screws (lots and lots of small screws). The job came out pretty nice but the metal is thinner than the original was. Just means you have to be more careful when using the toon.

It took awhile but the end result was worth it to me.

Re: 1993 Monark Suncaster 240 Fish - Fence Panels Dented and Ripped

Hi, I just read this post and this seems like the way to go to refurbish the side panels.
I have a Sun Tracker that I bought used and was cleaning the panels with a toon cleaner I bought and my pressure washer. I knocked some of the paint off to the bare aluminum and still some of it wouldn't come clean.
Could these products here could they be cut and glued on, if so what glue to you recommend and what is a good way to keep the bubbles from under it.

Thanks and have a Blessed day,
Wade

I did this once to a dented piece. I used some constructive adhesive from Home Depot. It held for several years until I sold the boat.
