1993 Mercury 40HP, S/N 0G012038 either not charging, or discharging battery
Problem started intermittent (from gauge reading) late last season.
I believe I may have a bad rectifier/regulator from checks I made from a Clymer manual, but I am unsure on the stator check.
The stator isn't shorted to ground, but I get no reading across the two yellow wires with a digital meter and an old analog I had to borrow, gives me either just a continuity reading or very low resistance.

Should I be getting a reading on the stator with a digital?
I'm not sure if I can trust the analog readings against the digital.

If I replace the rectifier and try it without replacing the stator, will it ruin the new rectifier if the stator turns out to be bad?
Do they usually go out as a pair?
Is there anything else in the charging circuit that I may be overlooking?
I already tried a different battery.
