My new project a 1993 2250 Bayliner Classic has me here for some feedback. Couldn't start the GM 5.0 LX Merc. until I cleaned carb and after I reinstalled it the engine started on first turn. Then next time out it would not start. Then while trying to start it, the engine now intermittently makes a loud grinding noise (1 second or less) from starter area. Not a clicking noise. Would that be caused by a defective solenoid on top of the engine or the slave solenoid on starter? Is there an easy check for these solenoids before I take starter off?

Ayuh,.... I'd sooner think the starter, or it's bendix drive, or the ring gear teeth are the problem,....

It's possible it's the starter mounted solenoid, as it actuates the bendix...

But I really doubt it's the motor mounted primary solenoid, as the starter wouldn't do anything, if it don't pass power...

I'm going to check the voltage to the slave solenoid and starter first.

Story End---- I purchased another starter. The solenoid is built into the starter housing. Put back in... was the issue...
