I did a rebuild on this engine and the rear main seal send in the kit was from a Ford motor. So I bought one at the auto store for a similar Chevy engine. Now it looks like there is an oil leak in that area. I wonder if the seals could be different, marine from automotive. And the other question is if there is any way to seal the leak or replace the seal without removing the engine. Thank you.

rear main seal fits both applications , the flywheel does have to come off though

Yep, I believe I'd have to take off the outdrive and remove the engine if the leak is in the rear main seal. That sucks since I thought the boat restoration is finished. Another week or so to repair this.

are you sure it the RMS leaking and not one of the galley plugs. either way, need to pull the motor out.

I'll inspect the leak with a mirror and a flashlight. Hopefully it is not too messy there so I can clearly see the source. I'm pretty sure it is a RMS, but hope it might be something easier to fix without pulling the engine

My buddy mechanic checked out the leak and confirmed the rms leak. Crap. Will have to pull the engine out......
