I am having problems with my 1993 Johnson 30 hp engine on my Pontoon boat. I resurrected this boat as it had been sitting and rotting at my neighbors house and I bought it for scrap value. after new carpet flooring and a lot of cleaning it is looking pretty good however,
at the beginning of the year it started great and ran good although a little rich, as the summer progressed the boat was harder and harder to start in the morning, to the point that after it finally started it would take a couple of minutes to clear out the excess fuel. I went to start it the other day and would not turn over, after checking the battery and connections i pulled the plugs and turned the engine over and about a cup of gas shot out of the plug holes, it was hydro locked with fuel, after cleaning it out it ran good again. it has done this the following couple of days also.
When i got the boat it had not run in a year or so. I changed the fuel tank to a different OMC tank as the original one was rusty.
I pulled the carb and cleaned it out and checked the float height and to my surprise everything looked good and clean, the float height was correct and the float valve seemed to hold properly,
I also checked the primer solenoid and it was not sticking or pumping excess fuel into the intake, in fact it did not seem to work at all. I will deal with that after I get the other running problem solved
It seems to me that the tank always has pressure on it and the bulb is always hard, I never had to pump the bulb, can the excess pressure in the tank be pushing fuel past the primer or float and flooding the engine. The tank does not seem to have any type of vent on it.
I tried a neighbors fuel tank on it and let it sit overnight and it started great the next morning. before i spend 60.00 on a new fuel tank I would like some of the Johnson experts opinions.
Sorry about the long rambling post
Thanks
Mike
