We just bought a 1994 Beachcomber pontoon boat with a 1993 Johnson 60 hp outboard motor. It sat up for awhile and we cleaned the carburetors and fuel lines, we also cleaned the gas tank and put a new hose with the bulb on it. We are having problems with it getting fuel. We were told when we bought it that they took the VRO pump off and it does have an electric fuel pump on it. Sometimes it will not stayed primed and sometimes it will not take fuel when you put it in gear. It acts like it is running out of fuel when you get it up to 3500 to 4000 rpms and run it that way for a bit. Any suggestions?

well the electric fuel pump is totally wrong on an outboard. (fire hazard) it also sounds like it needs a carb cleaning. we can tell you how to install a proper fuel pump.

I Really Appreciate You Responding. That Is Kind Of What We Tho't. Last Night We Found A Vaccuum Leak And We Fixed It. It Was A Bad Cap On A Vaccuum For The Original Fuel Pump. They Say That A Fuel Pump For This Motor Is About $350. It Is Running Worse Now Than It Did With The Vaccuum Leak. When We Get A Fuel Pump I Will Get You To Tell Us How To Put It On If You Don't Mind. Just Hope That We Haven't Burn't A Piston Or Something.

you can use a standard fuel pump, for +- $80.00 and premix you fuel, instead of the $350 pump. i have several motors done this way. if you want to do this let us know. works great, uses the original connections, instead of the electric pump. it is a standard conversion.

Ok, We Got The New Fuel Pump Today, And You Were Right. They Were Trying To Get To Us On The One That Was Quoted. We Pd $96 For This One. We Went Ahead And Bought Carburetor Kits For All Three Also. If You Would Please Write Back And Tell Us How To Install. My Husband Has A Pretty Good Idea But, Would Just Like Someone That Has Done It To Tell Us To Make Sure We Don't Leave Anything Out Or Off. I Hate That Extra Parts Leftover Kind Of Thing. Lol! I Really Appreciate All Of Your Help With Our New To Us Used Boat.
Thanks Again,

Installing the kits is very straightforward. I would do the following steps.

1. Got a digital camera? If so, take plenty of pictures before you remove anything, especially linkages. A pic. is worth a thousand words.

2. Do one carb, at a time. The top one is the easiest.

3. Disassemble the carb. taking pictures. Soak them in carb. cleaner and blow out every passage with compressed air.

4. Reassemble. By the way, you may have parts, in the kits, you don't use, especially if they are non OEM kits.;):)

If it were me, I'd buy an OEM manual for about $30.00. They're all over ebay.

if you got the 2 line pump, there is a plug with a bolt hole on the side on the block, remove the plug, it is the pulse point for the pump, then with gasket between the block and pump, mount the pump. the in line goes to the black plastic inlet, the brass out to the carbs. everything else should have already been done. the original pulse line needs to be blocked.

Ok, The Fuel Pump Is On And The Carburetors Are Rebuilt. The Only Question We Have Now Is That There Is A Small Vaccuum Under The Carbs And One Under The Starter That Had Plugs On Them When The Electric Fuel Pum Was On. Do We Need To Put Plugs On Them And Were They For The Vro Pump? The Vaccuum Line On The Fuel Pump Is Hooked To The Vaccuum On The Same Side Of The Motor. This One Too Was Plugged Off When The Electric Pump Was On The Motor. We Have Not Tried To Start Because We Didn't Know What To Do With These Other To Vaccuum Ports. I Really Want This Boat On The Water This Weekend, Please Help!

Thanks In Advance,
