Hi all. Am new to the forum. Looks like alot of good info. I purchased a 93 glastron 175 ssv elite with the yamaha 4.3 with a cracked block last fall. Built a new motor from a core block and it runs great but cannot find anywhere what jumpers are needed to put the ignition system into base timing so I can set it. Can anyone help me out.
Thanks

I have the yamaha L4. I also have the Clymer book which covers all the yamaha marinized engines. I will have a look when i get home if no one else has chimed in to help.

Is it the YEMS ignition system? I have the book in with me.

i Think what you are missing is the ignition timing jumper. I need it for my yammie, i didnt know that the 4.3 used it as well. I am guessing that the mercruiser engines need them as well, so you might be able to get one of them. My buddy made mine for me at his automotive shop. I know that the merc and yammie use the same distributor cap.

If you want a pic of it, and that particular page in the book, send me your email, or maybe i can post here.
Anyways, assuming you have it -
- install a flush kit,and connect a timing light to #1
- locate timing marks on the engine, clean and apply a white coat or chalk to see better.
- start the engine, and allow to get up to operating temperature.timing MUST be checked at idle speed 700-800 rpm.
-on the distributor, you will see 2 connectors, disconnect the WIDEST connector....make sure you do not break the clip.
- then connect the ignition jumper to the distributor, and connect the alligator clip(part of the jumper setup), to a 12 volt source.(use the UP trim source).
- point the timing light at the mark and adjust. Set the timing ONLY at idle.

I hope this helps. This book is available on ebay. Just type in yamaha sterndrive for a search, and you will see it there.

Re: 1993 glastron ssv 175 elite timing

Thanks for the info Rico. I am a 17 year journeyman automotive mechanic but have never worked on boats and want to make sure I set the timing proper (I do appreciate the detailed step by step instructions but should be okay on how to set). The jumper wire that goes in the 4-wire plug in the distributor, is there just the 1 wire coming out of it that has to be powered by a 12 volt signal or is there more wires in the plug? If just the one, which terminal is it? If you could send me pics that you have and the page out of your manual, that would be greatly appreciated. I am going to set the timing in the morning. Thanks for going through all this trouble for me.

No problem. I showed my friend what I needed, and he has the plug that i needed at his shop, so maybe you will have one?
There are 2 connectors on your distributor. The wide one is the one you want.
imagine with the retaining clip on top(up), and the plug part facing to the left. The 2 furthest away wires, are now connected together. Thats the jump. Then the closest to you of the wires is the one that goes to a 12 volt supply. The book says you can use the 'up' trim relay red wire. I'm sure the positive side of the battery is also suitable.
I have to leave now to play is a hockey tournament, and i will be back at supper time(10 hrs from now). i will try to upload this info for you.
