I have a 1993 force 40 hp that I recently replaced the water pump in. It would start up and run fine before then but now all it will do is start up and run for a few seconds and then will die. I'm new to boats and I'm not sure what the issue may be. Any insult would be greatly appreciated

Stitz80, :welcome: to iboats...

Sounds like you have a fuel delivery issue. Have to checked the fuel pump or the primer bulb and fuel lines from the tank to the engine? May be time to rebuilt the carb and install a carb kit in it. JMHO!

gm280,

when i prime the primer bulb it gets hard but after starting it goes soft and is still soft once the motor dies. I was going to try and clean the carbs but if I do that I might as well put in a new carb kit right? Also how hard is it to rebuild the carb?

Stitz80, before getting too far ahead of yourself, remove the fuel line going from the fuel pump to the carb and crank the engine over. See if fuel streams out of the fuel line nicely. If not, you found your problem. That being either the fuel pump needs rebuilt or replaced OR you have a problem with the pickup or priming bulb from the tank. More then likely it will be the fuel pump though. If fuel does stream out nicely, then everything from the tank to the fuel pump has just been verified and the carb is your problem. Hope that helps you out. Ad the carb really isn't that complicated to disassemble and clean and reassembly with a carb kit installed. You just have to make sure that every passage way and tiny hole(s) are clear and clean. If you go to a web sit called boats dot com, and select the manufacture of your engine, and then the year and HP, you will see your engine break down. And you can take a look at the break down for your carb to help you out... JMHO!

Gm280,
I believe the fuel pump is not the issue took the line off the carb and fuel did come out so looks like I'm goin to be taking the carb apart and hope that works. Thanks for the advice

Will I need to purchase a new gasket kit or a repair kit for the carb once I take it apart to clean?

You can likely reuse most of them, it just depends on their condition. But I would probably go ahead and order a kit or all of the individual kit parts separately just for good measure. You should be able to find a kit for as low as $10-12.

You should be able to clean the carb and just reassemble.
The squeezie: It's job is to draw fuel from the tank and fill the float bowl.
Then when it's firm, it's job is done.
Once the motor starts the ball should go soft.

The carb air screw might need adjusting.
Start at 1 and 1/2 turns out.

I use Dawn soap and clean water.
Then blow dry.

Don't use any sprays like WD or silicone sprays.
This can gum up the works.

I'd go ahead and get the repair kit. The only additional things it comes with though is likely a new float bowl inlet needle and spring for the idle mixture screw and you may not need a new one of either.

Well the carb has been cleaned and it is getting fuel and it still won't run but I did notice fuel come in back out of the front of the carb once I stop trying to start
