I have a 93 Evinrude 48hp & trying to replace manual trim/tilt with hydraulic unit. Question I have is the piston pin holding the piston to the motor mount a screw-in pin? Or should it slide out? THe reason I ask this is there is a cotter pin on the other side of the piston pin & my persuasion technique (hammer & flat chisel) seem to have no effect.

I have a 1989 40hp Johnson and I just replace the tilt assist unit on it. The long bolt on the bottom that holds the tilt unit to the motor just slides in. It took about an hour and a half of constant hammering to get the old one off. Don't forget to use penetrating oil or wd 40. That will help. Good luck! If you find another trim unit for a 40hp or 50hp let me know. The cheapest I have found is $300 for a used one.

I have 1987 model....Johnson 40hp...with same assist cylinder (looks like a small shock absorber). Just what exactly is its function...?

Seems like mine actually makes it much more difficult to raise motor, just the opposite of any assist. Is it actually suppose to be pushing the motor foot upward as motor is manually tilted?

Thanks!

adc,
I think your unit has gone out and lost its pressure. It will make it harder to lift up the motor when it is bad. What a difference a good one makes. No more breaking your back. I found one on ebay for $65. If you keep watching you might find one before spring.
