1993 DP-C1 drive quick question (probably stupid!)

Hi all,
Just a quick question, again probably stupid, but I had my boat in the water for the second time yesterday and when I had it on the trailer I noticed that some water was coming from the upper shift mec cover. Just wondered if water is supposed to get into that cover as when I removed it there is no obvous seal just seems to be metal to metal? These sterndrives are new to me!!

Yes, water gets in there. It is not sealed.
