New to forum. thanks for patience. We are looking to buy 1st family boat. Own a cabin in Colorado near 3 lakes. We have 3 boys and would like to start tubing, fishing, basically getting out on lakes. Question: 1993 Bayliner Capri in great condition with one owner. Is this year a concern year for Bayliner floors or ok year? I'm just not totally clear on the Bayliner history and what years are a little scary vs. not scary. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Re: 1993 Bayliner-OK or Bad year for floor?

Hi ....welcome to iboats !

Um....ok....how do i put this?

The 93 liners were a good boat if well kept.
If the owners left them out side with the boat uncovered, chances are , its toast. If the boat was well cared for. it will be fine !
It isnt so much as Bayliners being carp........as it is of the owners and how they took care of the boats.
But yes, the 93's could be trouble

So....you really have to check the boat over. One of the best ways .....is to weigh the boat against manufacturers specs.......empty fuel, and nothing on board.
If you are 100 lbs over spec....well there is issues.

Another thing to watch out for, is , if is in an inboard out board......if the drive says OMC.....forget it. As well......if it has an L drive....run ! (an L drive was a weird configuration that did not look like any other standard I/O)....

Cheers, and again, Welcome aboard !
oops

Just take pics and post them here......we can tell you wither to have the boat inspected or not.

Thanks so much for your welcome and help. Hoping this works: Here is a link to the boat: http://denver.craigslist.org/boat

I looked at the boat and it does seem well taken care of. Nothing wrong with floor yet. I guess my worry is that we actually might be a little harder on boat up at our cabin. We would keep it out during summer (rain) and garage it in winter. It does not have the OMC, it has a merc cruiser. Not sure about the L drive...If link to boat works great, if not I'm sorry. Thanks again for your opinion.

the link didnt fully work ......the last half of the link wasnt there

merc is good......if it looks like a standard i.o situation......then fine.

the way to test the deck is to take a rubber hammer and pound around the deck.....under the battery, near the walk thru, and just in front of the dog house.
oh.,.....and on the transom, around the drive and under any screw bolt or hook you see.

also,,,,,if it has a ski locker...that is great....stick your head in there with a flash light, and have a good look....a really good look....any rot...and no thanks.

Even if its #1 condition because the owner took proper care of it, if you leave it out in the rain like you said it'll turn to crap in a few years. Compared to what the boat costs, a custom built cover isn't too much to spend to protect your investment. Better option is an enclosure that prtoects the gel coat as well.

the boat looks great. !

there are several things i like about it...it is not an l dirve.

that is a proper merc set up. im guessing that it is just a little highly priced.....not much....but a little. about 1k over.

if it comes with all the canvas and a travel cover.....i would go 5k in confidence.
if it is just the way you see it with no canvas......3,500-4k.

as far as storage.......a cheap costco tent at the lake with a travel cover over the boat.....store with the plug out.....and your fine !!!!.

Any boat that age needs to be carefully inspected. I agree with opps, from the pictures, it looks like it has been taken care of.

Bayliner has sold this model for years, and now it is the 175. I don't know what they sell for now, but for many years it was 9-10K. It is their entry level boat, and a good starter boat. With a family of five, you might find yourself looking for a larger one in a few years. If your boys are young now, by time they are teenagers, a bigger boat will be looking good.

Also, given Colorado, elevation robs some of the hp. If your cabin is significantly higher than where you do a test run, there will be a noticaable difference. Might have to drop down in prop pitch, and will have lower wot top speed.

I assume you are getting a great deal, so it will make a great starter boat. You will make great memories, fish, ski, and picnic. The floor will rot, the starter will die every year, the bilge pump will burn out, the aluminum prop will crack, the gas gauge will fail you, and the impeller will get clogged with sand. (oh yeah, dont forget the drain plug!). With each challenge you will learn more about your boat, and maybe, just maybe, enjoy fixing it yourself. So dont worry about the floor, just get out there and start skiing! I have a 1996 Bayliner Capri 1750. 3 years ocean, the rest on lakes. Garage kept except for summer and the floor started rotting in 2001. I extended the life until 2005 with 2 component epoxy product designed for floors with rot. then I resorted to a carefully cut piece of marine grade plywood covering the sagging middle. A 5 dollar outdoor carpet, and it actually looks and performs good. My plan is to wait another year or two, then put the motor on a used boat hull. Good luck Holly

Welcome to i boats...But cutting a piece of plywood covering the sagging middle is a dangerous way of restoring...(quick fix)I bet you that you have transom rot and also stringer rot.Check out the resto threads here on I boats and see how its really done,I mike
