1993 40hp knock

Had someone look at my motor today, told me it had a knock. I thought they all sound this way like a rattle when you rev up and down. So he moved the fly wheel by hand and you do hear a knock or click before it catches. Is this normal?

Not usually, a knock is not normal in any motor. There are different ways to check for play without tearing it apart, search the forums for diagnosis info.

So has someone turned their flyweel back & forth and heard this click or knock or do I have a big problem. The motor runs great but he said he would have to go into it may cost up to $2500 to rebuild

Usually a knock is heard while the motor is running, you may just be hearing the motor internals moving inside while turning the flywheel. A knock is evident, if you've owned this thing for a while and it sounds the same as always chances are its fine. If you are worried about it take it to another mechanic and get a second opinion.
